Kel-Tec's single magazine version looks like the better choice for home defense, unless we're talking social order breakdown. Backed up with a decent SD handgun, you should be in very good shape against home invaders.

Technically, it depends on where you live and the number of people in your house along with the close proximity of neighbors. Shotgun blasts can go through walls!
Theres 3 people in this house so keeping a loaded shotgun to defend the interior is not in my best interest.
Given that, Shogun’s are not a reasonable means of defense if you live in an apartment.
Yes 9mm will go through a wall, but not 8-9 of em every time you pull the trigger.

But I do have two shotguns in the safe. A very old but mint shape Ithica single shot and a S&W pump I forget the model old Police Officer special.
old model 37 riot gun 12 ga.

WIth my neck issues, I can't shoot shotguns anymore. Otherwise, I'd probably have that new Beretta semi auto.

I use a Saiga 12 with a recoil-reducing adjustable stock, 10 rd mags (loaded with 9) and 5 rd mags, an attached flashlight, and loaded with 00 buck. The stock absorbs 25% of the recoil at a minimum. Neighbors are far enough away so that's not a consideration. But I look at the shotgun inside the home as too much noise, and too much collateral destruction. Outside, to 75 yards, it's great.

I will say I wouldn't count on any of the Turkish import autoloading shotguns.

TFB TV did a Benelli M4 500 round test lately. It stopped because his aftermarket parts broke - not because of the factory gun. But, he mentioned that their previous tests showed that none of the Turkish autoloaders even made it to 500 rounds without dying first.

I would NOT want to shoot the Kel-Tec with the Federal 00 Buck Law Enforcement loads I have. My preference for 12-gauge shotgun SD loads is #4 Buck. But my first choice for home defense would be a handgun for a number of reasons, except those specific cases where a shotgun would be the obvious choice.

Heavy recoil, serious muzzle blast. Yes, I know that in an extreme encounter those factors may well be moot but still, I don't want anything disrupting me in the event I have to use one of my firearms in my defense.

The absolute best shotgun for home defense ....drum roll please ....

Is the loaded one by your bed side ... when something goes bump / crash in the dark of night!

All others are totally worthless .

So ...whatever you got ... load it , slip on a butt cuff with extra ammo and...
be prepared !

Not a fan of long guns for home defense. But, I suppose one would be better than nothing at all.

Not a fan of shotgun for HD. As long as it is reliable, it is Golden. It will work, IF you are competent. Competent isn't reading the internet banter, it is getting out and shooting.
Depending on the choke, you are shooting a pattern between a nickel and soup can width, You CAN miss. Get out a little and the 00 that everyone salivates over can actually open up enough to miss. Most don't use a proper load. #4, #2, or 0 Buckshot, not shot, buckshot you need pattern density for best results. Yes, with the right load at the right distance, they are devastating, just make sure you know both of those for your situation.
Heavy recoil, limited magazine capacity, limited range, no thanks.
The other "limitations" I've read here so far are BS, or real close. Round balls do have a very linear penetration tendency. There are always considerations to account for, but so much urban legend. Sounds like some should use a water pistol.
Rant off.

They used to sell the crap out of those things, everywhere.

Now, you don't see them anymore? What happened? Did they go broke?

Import problems since they were Russian-made. I don't think any have been imported in over a decade (I might be wrong about the time period).

Also, the influx of cheaply made AK-style autoloaders from Turkey and some US companies sufficed for many new buyers. If you notice, many will say they're a Saiga clone (which they are not in material and workmanship).

Saigas are still out there on the secondary market and command higher prices, but not many people who have them wish to part with them.

I also have a Saiga 7.62 x 39 that is excellent.

THE BEST SHOTGUNS FOR HOME DEFENSE

I can go 50/50 on Shotguns being good for home defense. I have a Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip and no stock in the corner of my bedroom and I also have a Taurus Judge which I move around the house depending where I'm at for any part of the day. I haven't used either one for home defense yet and I Pray I never need to. I just like being Prepared.
