Help settle an argument for me. Fluted barrels on pistols don't do anything

My colleague and I are arguing about a fluted barrel on pistols whether it does anything or not. Background, he's a mechanical engineer, I spend way too much money on defense equipment and we are working on a race gun build based on either a g34 or 17L. My argument is that on a pistol it is mainly for aesthetic purposes since heat dissipation between fluted and non fluted is virtually impossible to see a difference.
My colleague says fluted barrels have greater durability because of the heat dispersing better especially if it is a work
gun with heavy round counts.

I think that you win the argument, it's mainly for aesthetics. That is if you can see it. It's not like an air cooled engine. Any heat dispersion would be negligible.

Well, one thing is for sure regarding fluted barrels and that would be fluting reduces the weight compared to an identical non fluted barrel. How much so depends on the amount of fluting.

Fluting a rifle barrel does nothing for heat dissipation don't see how a pistol would be any different. It is mainly for looks and weight reduction. Fluting not done right can mess up a good barrel.
In my experience, bull barrels and heavy barrels compared to pencil barrels take longer to heat up and slower to cool down and visa-versa.
