I am looking to purchase my 2nd handgun. My first is a Glock 19 and I'm currently looking for a .40. I have rented a .40 cal Glock and my dad owns an XD40, so I have experience with both. The XD I like and the Glock I hated. My question is, these guns run in the $500 range. I have no experience with SIG, but why does the P229 cost $300 more than the other 2, especially considering the reputations of the glock and xd?
I just bought an XD myself this past week. Saturday was my first outing. I have always been a 1911 fan I own a model 70 Colt and a Kimber Target II.
I was a little concerned about the trigger of the XD but really didnt seem to be an issue. At 7 yards my first clip were all inside the center 1" bull with 1 flyer just outside the bull. I only had limited time so I fired 50 at 7 yards and 50 at 15 yards. I was extremely pleased with the XD. Only 100 rounds but not a single hiccup. My wife also fired 12 rounds at 7 yards no cycling issues at all.
I was in your boat last week. I handled about every .40 caliber composite model. Sig, M&P, Beretta Storm, Browning HP, Glock, XD
XD, Storm and Browning made my short list as I really like the natural feel and point of these. Browning HP the hammer was too close to my hand. I could not find anyone locally to try to storm. I really like the feel in the store with the decocker and the trigger pull was one of the better of the group. I shot an XD 45 and after a few friends comments. I went with the XD. I think it was a good choice.
Maybe I will add the PX4 storm to my wish list to Santa. I have a feeling the Storm will also be a fine pistol.
neither one of them have the reputation of the sig. and the glock does not have second strike capability,also sigs are all metal.i have two sigs and believe me when they say( to hell and back reliability)....its true.Quote:

Some people really believe Sigs are worth another $300 or so. If you aren't one of those people, and don't find the Sig fits you any better than the others, get something else. They'll all be plenty reliable with proper care, and I'm betting Mike will have more to say on that. Get what you want, and don't be intimidated if it isn't on the high end of the price spectrum.
I'm not intimidated. The Glock 19 was only 500. And as far as reliability goes, it always seemed to me that Glock's were the flagship. Pretty much anybody Ive ever spoken to about handguns says the same thing, and as far as my own experience, I've put about 2000 rounds through it with never a jam or misfire or single problem, and I have only cleaned it twice. So its hard for me to believe a SIG could be MORE reliable, just as im sure, but I doubt more. I was just wondering if there was something else to it, something special about it that puts it in the 800 range.
If you are torn, I would recommend trying to find a Sig to rent. Or look around at the gun range, most folks are willing to let you fire a few times.
Go with the one that feels the best to you. I'm sure all of these ones you have listed will serve you well. Everyone has opinions, only yours matters! good luck!

Someone above said they are all metal compared to composite frame. I'm sure that additional machine etc is driving the additional costs. Plus the Sig also has a decocker and single double trigger.

if you just have to have something to justify the cost it would be the engineering.sigs are made so the slide barely even rubs the frame the rails.the slides are also cut out of solid blocks i believe.in other words they cost a lot to make.
SIG vs. Glock reliability arguments are pointless. Both guns have extremely long track records of excellent reliability. One member here likes to harp on the plastic guide rod in the Glock, but can't point to a single case of failure of that part. :rolleyes:
The XD does not have the long track record of either of the other guns, but does seem reliable.
I strongly prefer the Glock to the SIG because of the much lower bore axis, consistent trigger, and short trigger reset.
The SIG is simply more expensive to manufacture, with the metal frame and more intricately machined slide. Thus, the higher cost.

I have no idea about this model. I was just obsessing on the net (again) and decided to read the Sig site. I didnt realize they made a poly frame gun. Check it out. I saw on Gunbroker prices are around the 500-600 range. So that is in line with the other comparing models.
