Chamber fit

I just bought my first semi-auto, a Taurus 24/7 Pro .45. Having a very short trigger finger, I very much like the grips and size compared to others I tried. Here's a dummy's question.

I was surprised at what seems to me to be a huge amount of slop when the cartridge goes into the chamber - probably more than half a millimeter or almost 1/32 of an inch. I don't remember ever seeing that much looseness in a revolver. Assuming this is applicable to all such guns, how close are these things supposed to fit?
