Hey guys I don't own a pistol yet so I am in the process of asking all sorts of stupid questions. I know most people think it is a good idea to "break in" rifle barrels. Do handguns need this as well and if so what purpose does it serve? Thanks

You don't have to break in a pistol barrel (there's also some debate about breaking in a rifle barrel). Some semiautos do require a break in period to ensure proper function, however. Kahrs and KelTec pocket guns are probably the best examples of these.
And the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
Just to let you know that my Glock didn't need a "break in" period. Works like clockwork out of the box.
It may depend on the brand.
Thanks guys. That makes me feel better b/c I will probably be buying my first pistol at the next show I go to assuming I can find what I want at a good price. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't have to worry if the previous owner properly broke in the gun or not. That being said I know you still need to check out the condition of the gun as thuroughly as possible. I am still researching options but for now I think I have my eyes set on a H&K USP Compact. Still trying to decide on caliber though.
