Next gun purchase, time for a MONSTER?

I own several SIGs, and I swear by them. I just bought a SA loaded 1911. I'm trying to collect "icon" hand guns from different manufacturers. My father is handing over some classic revolvers and pistols. I have a pretty big handgun wish-list and I hope to be finished with it in the next 2 years. I have thirty days to think about my next purchase. I cannot stop thinking about the Desert Eagle .50, it's a MONSTER. I've never fired one. Anybody out there ever owned or fired this gun? What other "icon" handguns should I be looking at? What's in your gun cases?:shock:

I can't think of an automatic that is much more "iconic" than the Browning Hi Power.

Agreed. There are lots of "icon" handguns I'd buy before the silly and basically useless DE .50.

Just off the top of my head, aside from the Hi-Power, and in no particular order:

* Beretta 92
* S&W Combat Magnum/Model 19
* S&W Model 29
* Glock 17
* Walther P38
* P08 Luger
* Colt SAA
* HK P7
* Colt Python
* Walther PPK
* Ruger Mk. II

There are others, and if you're a rifle shooter, the list is even more extensive. All of these guns are more fun and less expensive to shoot than the DE, and most of them also have practical uses (though the Luger doesn't, and the SAA is questionable).

I'm not a collector, I'm a user, so the only one of these in my gun safe is the Glock.

DESERT EAGLE... It is always the Big-Daddy anywhere it goes. Nothing makes people drool more when it comes to raw gun power... :buttkick:

Think of what would give you goose-bumps if you say someone shooting one at a range.

Try a DE in gold, that would stand out! Go for the WOW factor, lol!

Got a de .50ae for x-mas from dad. It is sort of a novelty for me, but it does turn heads. I took it out to the range one day just to pop off a few before deer season when all the guys were sighting in deer rifles. I let off a couple of "double-taps" then looked down the line. About 50% of the rifle line were looking over at me. Sort of a joke really, as I would only try to take a bear or whitetail with this one.

I'll have to agree 100% with Mike on this one. It's a pretty good list but mine would be slightly different.

Thanks for the list you guys. Some of those are actually on mine, too. The DE was never on my list until I held one at my local shop. I always thought it was a "movie gun" and the cost has always steered me away. Now that my SIG collection is almost complete, the more I looked at it, the more the DE grew on me. The WOW factor doesn't hurt either. I went to the shop, today, to go through the function of the DE and I was in love. I don't even know where I would find the DE to test fire.
Oh, Dreager, I like it in black. The gold is too pimpy and the cost is crazy.

Every time some one mentions a DE I think about a show on the military channel about a group of SO's working the remote villages in Afghanistan.A rag tag bunch with beards.One had a DE strapped on.Very impressive to the locals for sure.Not sure they were really military because every body wearing a uniform is not military.Some things can not be done with the UCMJ hanging over their heads.

I haven't seen a DE here in Afghanistan. It almost certainly wouldn't be carried by US military personnel (if they're SF and want a large, useless pistol they can have an HK Mk 23), though I suppose stranger things have happened.

It was probably a contractor, who sometimes dress up in ACUs or other military uniforms. I wouldn't take too seriously what contractors carry. While most of the ones I have seen here carry reasonable weapons, I have seen a few with gadget-laden toys, like a competition-grade STI complete with giant mag funnel and compensator. The guy sure thought he was "da bomb," though!

Some of the above threads basically say they would buy a DE to impress other people. I don't really understand that, but then again I also drive unpretentious cars and carry ugly little cookie-cutter Glocks.
