Cleaning Question

O.K. I'm relatively new to shooting, but I shoot a lot. I have become very anal about cleaning my gun everytime I shoot and spending a lot of time on getting it as clean as I can. Now, I strip the weapon and clean as I am supposed to, but I can see a build up of "gunk" around the trigger mechanism and in other hard to get to spots inside the frame. I know the gun can be broken down further, but I wont pretend that Im qualified to do that, and the manual says that Idiots like me shouldnt get to crazy taking apart guns. How do I get those areas clean...its bugging the hell out of me.

It may be Important or may not be, but Im shooting a Smith & Wesson Sigma 9ve

What's your cleaning rig?

I use M-Pro7 solvent and it cleans the whole slide on my Glock: Spray and wipe down. For the tight areas, I use a tooth pick and wrap cloth around it.

For the frame/reciever, I just use soap and water. Dip an old tooth brush with soap, scrub the internals and externals and water it down. Lastly, I blow dry the whole thing. Maybe an air compressor (hair dryer) would help.

I do the same thing, except I use WD40, which does a good job, then I use gun oil on all moving parts, and wipe it down. :smt023 :smt023

Well, I certainly would recommend against WD40. If U do some searches on that topic on other forums and probably here as well, U'll see that topic discussed to death. It doesn't make a good gun oil.

But back on target. Go get a can of the POLYMER SAFE gunscrubber. Spray it into that area and let it dry (it evaporates in seconds). It will take care of it.

Right now I'm using Hoppes Elite Gun Cleaner and I'm a tooth pick with a cloth and a toothbrush using fool. the POLYMER SAFE gunscrubber seems to be the step I was lacking....thanks for the replies fellas.

I vote for the polymer safe Gun Scrubber as well. If you have problems like I used to have with the dirt being really stuck on good (carrying a gun in a money vault all the time is horrible because the dust attacks you the moment you walk in and is so hard to get off it is easier to paint over it) which can also happen if it builds up for a while you may want to invest in a big container of Q-Tips and some cheapo toothbrushes.

Just get BreakFree CLP in the aerosol can and drench the gun, scrub with old tooth brush and your good to go. We use this method on all are guns plus the guns we really don't know how to break down. Worked so far. Just remove excess oil/cleaner and you'll be alright.

I think it would be kinda hard to remove that much lubricant inside the mechanisms of the trigger. The gunscrubber is simpler - it evaporates.

I use Hoppes elite or mil pro 7 and a toothbrush on the slide and all other reachable parts then for the nooks and krannies I use gun scruber and a Qtip to get to the hard places sometimes a dental pick with a swab attached for the real hard places. After cleaning I give a good coat of oil and then wipe the excess off:smt1099
