What is .45 Auto cartridge?

I'm looking to buy the Ruger P90, but info on the web state that the gun is chambered for .45 Auto. I've look high and low for info on the cartridge, and so far I have no idea what's the deal with .45 Auto. I want to standardize my investment to a single cartridge, that is sufficient for self-defense, to use in both semis and revolvers. It seems that .45 are available on both semis and revolvers.

I've heard (more like read) many good review on the P90 and I want to invest in this gun and I want to know more about the .45 Auto cartridge. Thanks in advance for your input.

The gun uses 45 ACP - it is the common 45 round used in Colt 1911s and the other 1911 clones.

If you search for .45 ACP, U will find a lot of info, and all stores that sell ammo will carry it. It is very common.

Coolguy, .45 Auto is another name for .45 ACP, or .45 Automatic Colt Pistol. Just different names for the same thing. There are many, many autopistols chambered for .45 ACP/.45 Auto. There are SOME revolvers chambered for .45 ACP/.45 Auto (very nice revolvers, in fact), but there are also many revolvers (but no autopistols) chambered for the much longer .45 Colt cartridge (often mistakenly called .45 Long Colt). .45 ACP and .45 Colt are not interchangeable.

I went to Wal-Mart last summer, to stock up on the 100-round "value packs" of .45 ACP ammo. Told the clerk I wanted to buy 10 boxes/1000 rounds of .45 ACP. He said they didn't have any .45 ACP. I thought that was interesting, since we were standing next to a waist-high pile of Winchester White Box 100-packs, which I pointed out. "That's not .45 ACP," he said; "It's .45 Auto." Sure enough, that's what it says on the Winchester White Box that they sell at Wal-Mart, ".45 Auto." Nowhere on the box does it say ".45 ACP." "OK, I'll take 1000 rounds of the .45 Auto." "It won't work in your .45 ACP gun," he warned me. "They're not interchangeable." I allowed as how I would take my chances, so he reminded me that all ammo sales are final, and I couldn't get a refund when that .45 Auto ammo didn't work in my .45 ACP gun.

Buying ammo at Walmart is an experience akin to buying computer components at Fry's...sometimes you just want to tell the staff to shut up and hand you the box you asked for.

Trying not to defend the WalMart counter guy too much, as they should know what they are selling, but you can't really expect that from someone who's probably selling panty hose an hour later. He's just using the same logic that works well with many other cartridges:

.357 Mag - .357Sig
.45 ACP - .45 GAP
.380 Auto - .38 special

but..

you can use .44 special in a .44 mag
and even .38 special in a .357 magnum.

It's not all that simple for the casual shooter. He was just trying to be helpful no doubt.
