hey there,
I'm a College kid looking for home defense, I'm pretty broke but I would like to feel safe in my new place. I just heard about Hi-point, I've heard about them being made in the U.S. with a warranty, but is this hand gun gonna let me down if i'm in trouble? Furthermore, if I am to buy one could you suggest a caliber, I don't think i would be buying the .45, that's a strong round in a cheap gun, I heard the Hi-Point's can be bulky as well. I welcome all advice, comments and criticism.
Save a little longer and by something better. Maybe a Ruger or a used Glock. Hi-Points are a bad investment if you ask me. If you are going to stake your life on it, it might be nice to have something good, right?

I have 2 Hi-Point a C9 which is a 9mm. And a JCP which is a 40S&W. Both are fine guns. I have never had a problem with either one of them. They are bulky and HEAVY the 40S&W weighs 2lbs. They are difficult to take down. You need a hammer and hole punch to get the pin out to remove the slide. On the upside you only have to take it apart after about 5000rds. I would reccommened that you save up for something better. Like a Springfield XD.

Well in my opinion I would look for a used 9mm CZ 75 B or a good used Witness 9mm of some kind over a HIPOINT, wait a minute, you could just show the crook a picture of a HIPOINT that alone might scare him off, they are pretty ugly!
Man, pass that up ASAP.
Do yourself a favor... Buy a Stoeger Cougar in the $300 range (it is really a Beretta Cougar, but Beretta sold the machinery and design to them recently). Or, a Ruper Semi Auto - The polymer P95 is fairly cheap as well.

Here's a quote in the September issue of Gun Test magazine from PFC Tim Lose, Anne Arundel County Police Academy:
"...One of my duties is to be a firearms expert for the state attorney's office, test-firing guns that were used in crimes to prove they will function. I have test-fired many, many Hi-Points of all calibers, in all kinds of conditions, and I have yet to see one that did not work properly. Not saying I'd want to buy one - they are very top heavy, triggers tend to be mushy, safety is very small, ergonomics are poor; but they are inexpensive, and in my experience, reliable...."
He forgot to say they are butt ugly, too. That said, I believe your most reasonable option is a used Colt or Smith & Wesson revolver in caliber .38 Spl. There are lots of them out there, they are usually inexpensive, reliable, and take about 2 seconds to learn how to operate. Don't forget about your NRA basic handgun course of instruction and at least a few trips to the local range for practice.

Like others have said you should save up for something better. My buddy has a HP in .45. It works but I would not defend my life with it. The thing is huge and heavy! Ugly as hell. You can get used SIG's very cheap from CDNN so you may want to look into that. In the future you may want to conceal carry so keep that in mind.
