The theory behind comped guns is to have less muzzle flip. But, they work best in a high pressure round.
In the 1990s, I had a compensated 1911 - kewl gun actually. But, a comp doesn't really do much for a 45. When I shot it alongside a regular 1911 I had at the time, I really could not tell much difference. Neg side of the gun is that it is much louder - that comped 1911 I had was typically the loudest gun on the range, unless someone was shooting a 44. A comped gun is not a gun U would want to use in self defense, especially indoors. Permanent hearing damage for sure.
Also, in close quarter combat or a situation where the gun is close to your body, you could possibly get debris from the comp hitting U or your eyes.
I've had 2 comped guns in the past. They have a certain coolness factor. And, on a range gun, they are fine. As a defense gun, I can't recommend it.
+1 with ship,range yes,CCW or defense no,also the flame following the bullet out the barrel has to go somewhere,and its usually UP out the comp. so 1.It blinds YOU and 2 It COULD start YOU on fire if shooting from retention or a close to the body firing position.
+1 I shoot a Smith & Wesson 686-6 with a 6" ported barrel in my distinguished pistol leg matches. Wouldn't carry it though, the comp helps with the rapid fire string of fire. 5 rnds in 10 seconds @ 25 yds one handed, single action. it gives me time to cock the hammer between shots.

I've only used a compensator on an rifles before so I can't really comment. Compensators on a rifle are great. I'd like to try it on a pistol so I could observe them myself. Could they make a compensator on that pistol that would have a wider but lower flash signature?
What's the difference between porting and compensating? I take it there isn't much difference.
I have a 21c and never saw flames like that coming out the barrel. I think they used a dragon breath round just for show. I do have some flames coming out the top but nothing like that.Quote:

Go buy the Remington greenbox hollowpoints in the 100 round pack at Wal-Mart - Good god, those things are bright. At my indoor range, I am almost blinded shooting the stuff in a non comped gun.
