The simple reply is that it's the supreme law of the land in which this country is based upon period. If it's outdated, or those who claim as such they need to shut their mouths and get off their lazy asses and move congress to repeal it's articles or amendments by 2/3 rds of each house and then ratified by 3/4ths of the states. Furthermore, if they are referring to the second amendment remind them that it was recently addressed in the Heller decision by the Supreme Court a year or two ago. Tell them they need get into school and call them traitors as well. It's not so much that it's outdated, they just don't like it nor respect it.

Yes, I have heard that a number of times over the years and have read it in letters and opinion pages many times. My take is when people say this, you know it is more relevant today than ever. If you want to engage someone in conversation or debate about this, ask them with what would they replace the Constitution. What would they suggest as a better design for the nation? And does this also include the Bill of Rights (which according to at least two Founders, was not subject to amendment)?
It has been my experience when asking these questions of someone who makes a statement like this, that their response is in favor of a more socialistic form of government. The problem with these people is twofold: if you push them, you will soon find out that they have not fully thought out their argument; and that they tend to know little of history and what it teaches us about the folly of mankind with governments.

It is only outdated to those who don't fully understand it and don't know history. Ask anyone who thinks that if they know anything about the Federalist Papers. And not just "I've heard of them", I mean have read any part of it. I bet I can guess the answer. Understanding the political philosophy behind the words in the Constitution is necessary in truly understanding the document and it's implications.

As Steve mentions, there have been several questionable revisions to the Constitution, mostly in the progressive direction. Another was to popular election of Senators vs selection by State governments. If the Senators still worked for governors and state legislators there there would be no unfunded mandates.
