Every new in learning about Hand Guns

Hello

my name is Lisa, and i have been reseaching about handguns for at least the past month in the middle to end of Aug, a Friend of mine and I are going to take a course in hand GUNS, As we were sitting around talking one day and she was telling me that her husband keeps bugging her about handguns and that he is going to get her one and she is very uneasy about the whole thing.

what i did was get on the computer and looked up training of hand guns in our area and by the way we live in NJ, and i did find one and i told her maybe it would be better that she go to someone that teaches and does it day in and day out. she agreed, so i made the phone call and spoke with someone and explained to him that my friend was very uneasy so instead of doing a full class he will hold one just for the 2 of us, I thought that was really nice of him, he did say he takes no more then 4 people at a time but in our case he will just have the 2 of us.

So i have not even gotten my permit yet, but online have been looking at you tubes, and diffrent sites on best handguns for Women as well as others as i did find more then 1 site.

I also did find something else and it was a group of people who are members about concealing, i asked the guy that i will be going to and he said it will never happen in NJ, however if that is the case then how does someone new get their hand gun from home to a range to practice?????????

so sorry this was so long but thought i would explain everything, and also did find out that the trainer we are going to go to, told me i was correct in telling my friend that she should go to a class? what would you people think, rather then her husband?

I think that way as i am a trainer and behaviorist in dogs for over 30 years, and tell people all the time that not everyone knows how to handle some breeds as they think you can train a sporting breed the same way as a dobe, shep or rotti and you can not,, train them the same way and you can really hurt a sporting breed mental way if trained like you would working breeds.

well that is it, please e-mail me back as i am hoping this list will help me make the right choice on handguns besides me trying them out, as you have semi auto or revolver?

You as a trainer in my opinion are correct in getting training from a professional.It is much easier to not have to break bad habits later on.I have used handguns all my life and would suggest a revolver in 38 caliber.It has less gadgets,simple to operate and sufficient for self defense.This is only one old mans opinion.Main thing is get one that fits your hand and you feel happy with.You will know when you handle the right one.Alot of places have rentals that you can try out.This is a great way to spend quality time with the family and friends and enjoy an evening.

There is a big difference between concealed carry on one's person and legal transport to and from gunshop, home, range etc. Typically, the firearm has to be in a locked case with the ammunition stored separately during transport. Different states have different regulation on what and what is not the legal method of transport. I'm not comfortable enough with NJ law to say what is or isn't the legal manner to transport a firearm.


As for semi-autos vs. revolvers, each has their pros and cons. All that info should be discussed in your class. Talk to the instructor and see what kind of guns he or she may have to offer to students for use in class etc. Try as many as you can. Also ask about ranges that may have guns for rent.

As a husband and instructor, who's wife happens to also be an instructor, I can say that your friend is probably better off in seeking instruction from someone else. The dynamics of a marital relationship can make instructing one's spouse particularly....interesting to say the least.

I had watched i tubes and 2 of them was given by women and the one said do not get a semi auto, she had picked that up last, after she showed a number of diffrent handguns and the second one was a younger one who spoke about 7 diffrent kinds and both said how much more involved is a semi auto compared to a revolver and i did speak with the guy who is going to train us said we will be trying both kinds, so he can show us the diffrence between revolver and semi auto.

I would like something that will allow me to go to the range and practice so i also read about which amo can go in which revolver etc- if i said that correctly

For every one that recommends a revolver there are probably five that will recommend an auto. Not that there's anything wrong with a revolver they just aren't as popular.

If you're doing research. On women and guns, I would hope you come across the Cornered Cat website.

Thank you for the website i will check it out in the morning or closer in the afternoonn on Friday as it is already late, and been on the computer.
I also will be trying out semi-auto and Revolver when i take the course, from what i was i was told by the trainer we are going to go to.
I have been doing research on the diffrent hand guns and it just seems like i am leading towards one of the semi-auto, but will have to wait and see after i did try both out.

Just because a revolver is functionally "simpler" than a semi-auto, doesn't make it any more of a ladies gun than any other firearm. To assume that a lady must "love guns" before being able to cope with a mechanical safety, is silly. Personal preference is one thing, and gender bias is another. You don't have to love guns in order to carry one, but if you carry without being proficient with your chosen firearm, you're a fool....male or female.

The age-old "trade-off" in handguns is especially applicable to the ladies..... short barrel, light weight, only 5 or 6 rounds equals much more perceived recoil. REGARDLESS OF GENDER. That being said, get some training FIRST.... a good instructor will have a variety of guns for you to try out.

Once proficient with the fundamentals, then anyone can learn to shoot any caliber, as well as learn to shoot either a revolver, or a semi-auto.

Caliber comes AFTER proficiency in the fundamentals. Start with a .22 caliber something. Once a new shooter begins to flinch from shooting a large caliber right away, it's tough to "unlearn" it.

Shop for a firearm just like you shop for shoes.......

Shoes...... when you buy 'em, you try 'em on first...... if they don't feel good, you don't buy 'em..... if they feel good, and you buy 'em, chances are that you still might need to break in the shoes, and your feet.

Guns..... try 'em on first...... if they don't feel good, you don't buy 'em......... if they feel good, and you buy 'em, chances are that you still might need to practice with it, and enhance your ability to use it.....

Buying a handgun simply because someone else has one is just foolish. If there were a "best" handgun, we'd all own it, and the huge selection of handguns to choose from wouldn't exist.

Well, one thing i am doing is research so i have guestions for the trainer, and he did say that he will be showing both types, from what i read i would like something that i can use at the range often with killing the bank for ammo, also of cause the first thing is try each one and see what fits me first and then go from there i just want to get an idea about the diffrent hand guns.
I had a neighbor who does not live in the area anymore who is a cop for our township and i was talking to him one day about getting a hand gun and he showed me his off duty bretta, and told me that this is the one to get if i get one, but then you have the glock and smith and Wesson, seem to me to be the 3 top hand guns, and i clicked on some names i did not know and the cost of them was in the one hundred range low $200.00- like anything you do not want to go really cheap and or break the bank, I was told by my friends husband that the bretta's are every high in price which i looked and saw that are like $700.00 or more.

I was looking online at the beretta 3032 tomcat, model 21 bobcat and the bun 9 nano 9x19 MM
and as for the glock could not find info on that one
the smith and Wesson - SD40 low cap,sd40 standard and body guard 380 auto
all i am doing is reading about each one to learn more about them and that way have some idea when i start the course
so many to choose from and yes we were told to try them out before you buy, and i will do my best to do that

Welcome to the forum.

Find a training class that's women only. Try for a female trainer.
You'll be more comfortable.
Once you get to the range you'll be amazed at how many women shoot.

I think you have plenty of questions for the trainer now. More research at this point will only serve to confuse given your limited actual knowlege. Shoot the guns at the training, decide if you like auto or revolver. If 9mm .380 or .38 .40 or .45 is you most comfortable caliber. Then once you know the style and caliber you prefer you will have a much narrower search.

Get the gun you like best. If the one you like is a 700 dollar Berreta, and you only have 400 bucks. Save until you have $700. DO NOT get almost what you want. If you want a $600 glock $500 M&P $400 Ruger or a $300 S&W SD9 get the one you want. Do not get the SD9 because it is the cheapest and you really want a Glock and it is alot like a Glock. Thats really not a good way. If on the other hand you shoot the SD9 and you honestly like it. Good reason.

You can over analyse anything and there is a lot information on the web that is just not true but is presented as if it were. Just look at any Obama speak. Sorry wrong thread for that. A lot of what you read and hear from "experts" are opinion wrapped and presented as the truth. More then you may know.

I have over 15 handguns and CZ is by far the best manufacturer in the market. Unsurpassed quality and reliable and accurate. You can not go wrong owning or shooting a CZ. I shoot often and have become very proficient at the sport. My recomendation to everyone I talk too is Get a CZ.

See what I mean, thats my opinion but there is not one thing in that sentence you can know to be a fact.

Go into class with an open mind, like what you like, not what others tell you to like. Put alot of what you read out of your thoughts and listen to the instructor tell you how to use the weapons. Then use them and make your own questions and supply the answers to your self that you can.Sorry for the long winded response
