Permission to shoot outside of NYC?

Is anyone familiar with NYC law as far as getting permission to shoot outside the city? I know there's that hunting authorization card that allows you to transport your firearm anywhere within the state, but I just want to go to this range in Nassau. It's the only one I know of that doesn't require an annual membership (which gets expensive when you're only able to shoot as much as I am), and it's only about 15-20 minutes away from me. I would think calling the license division to ask them would be the answer, but that's never the answer. Any help is always appreciated, thanks all.

How can they regulate your shooting OUTSIDE of the city? Why would you need their permission? Oh wait, it's NYC.

Yes, it sucks haha. I'm hoping someday I can move out of NYC and into the United States.

So I thought I'd update this for all NY'ers out there. Upon my last visit to a range in Nassau (outside the city limits) I was informed that if you are going to visit a shooting range that is outside NYC, it is at the discretion of the range in question as to whether or not they allow you to shoot there. The Nassau range does in fact allow this (as does the range in Calverton; I called). As to what happens in route, the gentlemen was a bit less clear on that. He said you should be fine if you're following all the 'transportation regulations' and on your way to or from a friendly shooting range, but ultimately I think you're at the mercy of a police officer, should you be pulled over for whatever reason. Hope this helps anyone. I know I still want out of here, but until then, I'll have to settle for this.

Back then, none of this was a problem.
Yes, it was almost impossible to get a carry license in NYC.
But beyond that, there wasn't anything.

There used to be an indoor shooting range in the sub-basement of a building on Park Row, just across from City Hall.
I used to shoot there, maybe once a week.
I carried my .22 rifle downtown, in the subway, and nobody seemed to have any problem at all with that.

After we'd moved to the city, we still spent summers in either Amityville or Massapequa.
My rifle came with me, of course.
No problem with that, either.

My, how things have changed!

The PRNJ isn't even that bad with all of our convoluted laws.

i live in oregon, as of today, NYC doesnt not regulate oregon shooters.... altho i am pretty sure that bloomberg is trying to figure out how my freedoms causes crime in his city.

I was doing a bit of design work on an old (1920's) high school building, and have a copy of the original building blueprints. It brought a smile to my face when the basement plan outlined the design for the indoor rifle range. Areas for bench and prone shooting, backstop plans, etc.

When I went down into the basement, The elements of the backstop were still evident to the familiar eye. The concrete building columns were armored with plate on the uprange side as you'd expect. Alas, the basement was converted to the use of crap storage.

Picturing high school kids walking to school with their rifles across their shoulders brought images of a more responsible time that must have past, and the SWAT teams that would undoubtedly respond to such an occurrence today.

Wish it was still that way...everywhere. I don't think even here in Indiana one could do that anymore.

You know NY NJ march to there own beat! I think I read in a nra book within the last year of a man moving out of NJ properly transporting his handguns got pulled over arrested went on trial the judge woudnt let a law be heard that was on the books, and this man did some time till it was overturned! Wow i'm glad I escaped them crazy states! VA is one of the good gun pro states for sure! You really have to wonder why it's so crazy one country with 50 different gun laws! Its almost like you have to be a freakin lawyer to understand it all. Even here in VA I had to scrach my head, my wife and I travel alot on the blue ridge parkway. Also the skyline drive. I think one is a state park the other federal. Ether way you can carry on them. Now we went to jamestown (federal park) and it had big sign no firearms. I asked the ranger why you can carry in other federal parks but not here, all he could say was (thats a good question that I can't answer!) It was a good thing I left my gun home that trip as I had this crazy feeling not to take it that trip, cause I wase'nt leaving my gun in my saddle bag for sure!

i can answer that for you.... THE SIGN IS WRONG.... as of 2/22/2010 it became legal to carry a loaded firearm in a National Park as long as it was legal in that state to carry in a state park. the rules in the national parks now mirror the state laws in which the state is located.

so since it is legal to carry concealed in virginia, with a permit, its ok in the national parks in virginia. BUT WAIT! THATS NOT ALL!

on may 7, 2012 it became legal to OPEN carry in virginias state parks, so guess what? yep, you can open carry in jamestown!

its not MY opinion, its the law!

ok, so some caveats , you still cant carry in a federal building so visitors centers and rangers stations are off limits still.

that said, here in oregon i was open carrying and pulled up to a rangers station to grab a map, i almost walked in when i remembered the firearm.... i turned to walk back to my vehicle when a ranger stepped out and asked if he could help me.... i explained what i needed and that i was going to lock up my firearm.... he understood and brought me every map they had and also said if i needed to use the restroom, i didnt have to disarm, since he was the regional director or some such thing.... while i appreciated the offer, i wouldnt have taken him up on it.... never know whats gonna happen in the time it takes to take a leak.

so back to the jamestown sign, its wrong

Thanks Ted but to get into Jamestown you do have to enter through the ranger/federal building so they got one over on us there! Now when we went to Jamestown settlement (right down the road) That was state run and saw no firearm signs. So they kind of mess with ya.
