Am I Wrong Or Right? Or Possibly Both?

Ok quick rundown, my girlfriend is staying with her family right now, and is about to move out pretty soon. ok she and her sister are going to get an apartment so i've been hassling my lady to get a ccp and a pistol for her purse/car/bedroom (so we're clear here, i mean one single gun for the criteria, and not 3) and a good old pump 12 gauge for the apartment, so 2 firearms total for my baby. and suggested her to get her sister to get a pistol too. anyways she can handle herself and my pump 12 and my 45 pretty well so i believe that she will be fine (with some occasional trips to the backyard for practice to keep her sharp) so she is arguing that she does not need 2 guns for self-defense/home-defense. this isnt really about who is right or wrong but put yourself in my place and tell me what youd suggest, oh and im kinda pushing it since another girl i know got her house broke into twice in the past couple weeks, once when she was home, and they dont really live to far apart right now. so please lend me some guidance, wisdom, direction, opinions(as long as its not hoopla)

lol i actually thought about that, her excuse is that she doesnt want to pay for 2 guns lol, i can find pump 12s for cheap all the time so ill probably pay for it anyways

marry her, then she can move in with you and you can protect her!!! lol jk...my fiance is fixing to get her conceal carry permit...i am more than likely going to buy her either the ruger lcr 38 or the airweight smith and wesson 38. personally if she doesnt want a shotgun, dont rush it, just make sure she knows how to handle the pistol and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE with her.

well she kinda agrees with me but shes mainly being a cheapskate lol she can handle my mossberg like a pro, ive been suggesting a smith snubbie 38 or 357, all those frames are confusing to me but the j frame seems nice, either that or some auto between 9mm-45acp

If you are pushing too hard, she will NEVER do it. Be casual about showing her the facts (break-ins in her new neighborhood, etc...) and ask her to go with you to a gun shop just to look at pistols. Explain that your worry comes from love, and she'll get the pistol.

Also, if she only wants one gun, I would not push the shotgun. Baby steps.

The shotgun is probably the best for home defense, right? A large blast radius, in the dark, in the middle of the night, when you've just been awoken from a sound sleep. A shotgun sounds good to me.

Now, what about a defense if she gets approached when she's not in her apartment... like getting out of her car, walking through a parking lot, at the front door, etc...? That's where a handgun comes into play, unless she plans on toting the shotgun with her.

I think if she understand the need for both, then she might be more willing to have both.

Let her decide when she is ready for what she is ready for. It is nice that you would buy it for her......if she doesn't want it or won't use it then you are just buying something that wont get used. If she is truly just that cheap, there is more stuff to come besides this issue I garantee. Get yourself a new gun instead.

You know, shotguns don't have "a large blast radius" within the confines of a home. In full choke you can figure on a pattern 1" in diameter per yard away that the target is, so at 5 yards count on a 5" pattern. At 7 yards it's a 7" pattern, etc.

Added to the difficulty of managing a long gun inside a house, rounding corners, descending stairs, opening doors, and the handgun probably is the best option if she's not willing to be trained or practice a lot, ya know? Now, if she's going to sit down behind the bed and point the gun at the door till the police arrive, a 12 ga. is a GREAT choice, and the smartest possible thing for her to do to boot. Most people hearing abump in the night are going to go look rather than call the Police, though.

I'd go with a good high capacity 9mm, some really good hollow points (something based on Hornady HP/XTP or Golden Sabre, maybe?) and call it good.

Lol thanks guys like I said she kinda understands needing it, but she needs some practice for wielding such a weapon in the house. She definitely agrees that she needs a pistol, and I've explained the "oh s**t" factor that a shotgun presents to whoever its pointed at. So its basically gonna come down to me. Taking her gun shopping letting her find a pistol, then find her a good pump, then show her how to rule the house with both lol

My approach would be to get her a police sized pepper sprayer and a inert practice version of the same for her. Then have her practice with the inert sprayer, playing out all the scenarios that could occur that would require its use.

One or both of the following will occur:

She will become so aware of the dangers that she will be more open to owning a firearm.

or

She will feel adequately protected by having the pepper spray with her.

In either case she will be better prepared for an assault with the pepper spray than without it, and she will be getting herself into a self-defense mindset. She would only need to take the pepper spray out of her purse once in fear for it to tip over to the firearms camp.

But only buy a pepper sprayer that has a mating inert practice version. Without the practice and the scenarios the pepper spray is not going to do anyone any good.

thanks for the advice packard but i live in alabama and in case ya'll forgot, everyone here has a gun especially the badguys. quite honestly id rather rely on a gun for mine/her protection. why bring an spray-can to a gun fight? shes pretty familiar with guns, thanks to me. and agrees that she needs one but shes just running me around about the shotgun cause she doesnt want to pay for it

If I were you I would talk her into getting a good handgun. While a shotgun may be better for home defense a pistol is overall more practical. Easier to conceal, a lighter weight if she has to move around. a free hand if she needs it (say on the phone with Police, opening a door, etc). Also if she does investigate the bump in the night and someone is there that barrel will come out before she does. A quick grab and there is the potential to get it taken away. Slightly harder but not impossible with the pistol.

But that is what I would do for starters and go from there. If you can pick up shotguns for cheap buy one. Tell her it is yours but you want her to keep it for her house. Or if you are a good guy buy it and give it to her.

My wife can't shoot a shotgun for crap. So i have to leave my pistol at the house for her when i go to work. It sucks.

I am in with the handgun first crowd.
