Need a recommendation on a reliable gun for my wife.
She hates guns, but i travel alot for work, and our house has been broken into, and our garage on a seperate occasion.
she just wants something for the top shelf of the closet. something that will never jam, and cheap. budget is around $300-$400
I heard all pistols can jam, and revolvers have no issues and are fail proof.
anymore insight on why one would choose a revolver over a pistol, and vise versa?
Is she going to learn how to handle a handgun? Practice with it? If she's afraid of guns this may be a harder feat than you think. Does she have any experience at all?
For home defense, nothing says, "Get out of my house!" like a 12 ga. You have the issues of her feeling comfortable loading it & being comfortable firing it.
The quickest "easiest" choice would be a revolver - .357 or .38. I like the Ruger LCR, but that is me. I bought one "for my wife" since she isn't comfortable with my pistols.
Regardless of which way you go, training & practice is HUGE! Don't put a gun in your home & think you are finished.
She hates guns? Is she willing to use it on someone or does she (or you) want it as a "bluff"? If she pulls the gun she needs to be prepared to use it and not hope that the mere presence of the gun will scare someone away, becuase it might not, and then that gun has a good chance on being used on her.
That said, if you want a long gun, get her a 20 gauge shotty or a revolver if she wants a handgun and MAKE SURE SHE PRACTICES! And not just once.
Colt45, can you explain your level of experience? If your wife hates guns you selecting one for her is a terrible idea. Let me explain.
2 Sundays ago my lib step daughter told me she "needs" to buy a gun. Someone was banging on her door after dark, and she, her husband and baby hid instead of confronting him. He left and was confronted by the cops after visiting a couple more frt. doors. After questioning her further she knew nothing other than she was going to buy a pistol. I'm sure she was surprised to hear me say that if everything else went perfectly, she was at least a month from owning a handgun much less being "ready" to use it. Keep in mind, her views were completely opposite prior to this instance. I'm glad she sees the real world a little more clearly, but as you know you just don't run out and pick up a weapon and stick it on top the fridge. She hasn't responded to my invitations, and I won't go any further until she takes the correct steps. I doubt she'll do anything without my help and advice and I hope she's thinking and forming her mindset. We'll see.

All the questions asked are very legitimate considering your initial post. It is very hard to recomend a gun for some one afraid of guns, something that never jams and is inexpensive. Based soley on that I can not begin to know how to make a recomendation. Good luck with your endevour, my first task would be getting her somewhere to shoot a gun and get fimiliar with them or a class for women or first time shooters,then she can see how they feel and what makes them work. I may take a few bucks out of your budget but it is money very well spent. Start saving again and get what she wants,

never said she was afraid of guns. also she has more experience than i do. as her father was a cop and took her shooting her whole life, she just simply doesnt find shooting fun, or the idea for what they can be used for.
So i guess some of you are saying there is no such thing as a $400 gun that is good enough, and wont jam?
just need the gun to shoot 1 time reliably.

The social and personal issues of newbie gun ownwership have already been addressed, so I'll just comment on the firearms themselves.
Yes, a revo is more reliable, but a revolver can jam up too, so they are by no means "fail proof". One example is when the ejector rod backs out and jams up against the front part of it's housing (not all have an ejector shroud). But OTOH, nothing is fool/failproof, so one has to go with the odds, and odds are that she will have much less chance of malfunction with a revolver.
You can get a used all-steel .38 or .357 revolver within your price fairly easily. These are very easy to shoot by just about any adult. If you get a .357, you could start with .38 loads and then work up to .357 as her proficiency advances. Check the used guns thread for some suggestions on where to look. Also, I think you can get a new Ruger .357 in your price range, and they would be a great choice.
So, you asked for something that will never jam, cheap, between $300 and $400, and you get a Glock 27. Since the Glock does not meet any of those requirements, it looks like you really didn't know what you were asking for in the first place.....Quote:
