Sell or Trade?

We've all been through this dilema, so I'm looking for some sound advice!!!

I have a Sig P239, Gen II SAS, 9mm, with Sig Super Walnut grips. The gun originally cost me like $769, and I added the grips for $120 (from Sig.)

I can sell the grips, so I am not really considering the grips in a trade or sell price.

Problem with selling, for me, is access to an FFL to ship. I can take the gun to any of the local shops or Gander Mountain and trade or sell. I'm thinking I'd get a bit more by selling on consignment, but that can be a wait and see, where trade is immediate.

Oh, why am I thinking of getting rid of such a good gun? I never use it, carry it, or shoot it. Probably have a couple of hundred rounds through the chamber. Mostly carry a Springfield loaded micro compact operator or my little KelTec P11. To me the Sig is just a bit too big for EDC.

So what would y'all do????

You will loose money on a direct sale or trade to an FFL holder about 99.9% of the time.


A FFL will have to mark up the gun to make profit, this means he's going to offer you as little as you will accept in order to make more profit, that profit is what you are loosing.

If money isn't tight and you're willing to loose up to $100+/-, sure trade/sell it to a dealer.

But I will say this, you have your two carry guns, you haven't specified that there is "X" gun at the shop calling your name so you have the time to post it for sale on the boars, Sigs usually sell quick and hold their value so you won't loose much ( in the great scheme of things) on it at all.

You may not have to ship the gun FROM an FFL as long as it is both legal in your state to ship a gun Fed-Ex (about $30.00 for overnight withough insurnace) and that the receiving FFL holder will receive guns from a non FFL holder (that info should go in your sales ad), if those two things are OK, you don't need to go through a dealer unless you want to pay less $$ on shipping. A FLL holder can ship a handgun via US Mail (3 day) for about $20.00.

if you don't want the hassle of shipping the gun, just put it on consignment after checking around for rates. It doesn't seem like you're in a hurry to axe the Sig, so waiting a while won't hurt you and it will give you more time to shop around. Just be advised that if you put the gun on consignment, and it does not sell and you want to get it back from the dealer, you may have to do/pay a back ground check to get your own gun back.

Do you really need the cash or do you just want another gun? I have a feeling you would regret taking a loss or trading it off. Don't do it man. Please.

PoP you live in Little Rock and no FFL's?

No pawn shop's in Little Rock? If there is a pawn shop there is an FFL. Also you can do a web search for local FFL's. That shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't think you would have any problem selling it . I have the P239 and love it - Mine is loanly and would like a companion.

I can find an FFL here in LR no problem, I just don't have a rapport with any of them. I'll have to reserch Arkansas law about shipping a weapon. I know I can mail a long gun, but I'm not sure about a handgun.

I guess what I really need/want to know is price. What is this gun worth these days? I looked on GB, but all the stuff there is NIB, so that really doesn't give me anything to go on. I figure (hope) I can get at least $700 if I sell it and maybe $600 if I trade.

Not looking to replace it with anything just yet.

Don't bother to research. You cannot mail a handgun (unless you are an FFL, of course).

You can however ship a handgun through a common carrier as already noted above.

I'd let it be a safe queen mostly cause I do not believe in selling guns unless forced to. My .02 worth.

My experiences with the trading option is the dealer was trying to steal from me.

I offered a gun they were selling new for 699.00, Mine hasn't been fired, 250.00 was the offer..

I took the gun home.

If you are still interested in selling the gun, list it on a local for sale website in the for sale section. I live in Arkansas also, and there is a new website that is getting off the ground.

www.arguntrader.com This is for arkansas residents only. List it there as a for sale listing, and you can even throw some trade options too.

www.armslist.com A second site to list on. This one is nationwide, but the same sort of deal.


the good thing about selling from one individual to another individual in Arkansas, is that it is perfectly legal to do a "Face-to-face" or FTF transaction with another legal arkansas resident.

I have bought firearms from people on both of these websites. Since you are dealing face to face, you don't have to worry about shipping the gun, accepting payment, FFLs, etc.

Jim, I just read this post, sorry. Well I put a CT grip on the 239, so I may end up keeping her. If I sold her, I'd probably ask $800 or so. Thanks!
