the new guy

hey everyone! i'm going to be moving to western nc from canada (rural-raised canadian), so i'm really looking forward to getting back into shooting again.

i was a rifle coach in the cadet movement, but we couldn't train them on anything other than WW2-era rifles modified to .22 single shots. i've never had the opportunity to actually handle a handgun, but i hear the ruger lcp .38 is a beauty for first-timers. i don't hold american citizenship (yet), so i can't get a ccw in my county.

anyone know of any restrictions placed on me in nc not having a ccw but transporting any handheld weapons to and from a range? i'm used to the draconian laws we have up here -- years ago, my dad refused to register his rifles because of the registry up here and he was forced to have the police dispose of them.

The Ruger LCP is NOT a first timers hand gun. Once you get to NC try to rent and shoot as many different HG's as you can before you purchase anything. Don't get me wrong, the LCP is a good handgun and I own one. It is my CCW when clothing does not allow anything bigger but it is not a fun gun to go out and shoot for fun. Also, the ammo is relatively expensive compared to say a 9mm.

Again, rent and shoot as many as you can before you buy.

Welcome from NC. I would agree that the LCP would not be the ideal choice for a first handgun for the reasons stated. I doubt your right to transport the firearm would be any different than a resident here, but you need to check with the local authorities for specifics. As long as you don't carry it concealed, you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. That's what I was planning to do anyways; every gun has its own feel after all so hopefully I can find one I'm relatively comfortable with. Like I said, I'm coming from a strictly rifle background, so this is a whole new world for me lol

Generally speaking, what's the going rate for the most common types of handgun ammo? I would guess 9mm ammo would be fairly cheap per box. Before my dad had to give up his rifles, we used to get pretty good rates for our ammo, but we mainly had .22 and .308 rifles so it would be cheap to get the ammo anyways.
