Safe storage of pistol - please help!

I'm trying to sort out a very safe way to store my pistol at home when not in use. Will this security plan work?

1 - Pistol unloaded and secured with a cable lock.
2 - Then I put the pistol in a fireproof combination safe that is bolted to the floor.
3 - Ammunition goes in a separate lock box that also goes in the safe.

Do you think that will be sufficient considering I do have my nieces visit the house once in a while? I'd love to be able to teach them about firearm safety, but the parents would freak out at the thought of there even being a gun in the house, even if it's in a very secure location. I'd rather keep my pistol ownership a secret, which means that I'll need to make sure it's impossible for kids to get their hands on the gun.

Ever consider one of those biometric safes or even one where you just key in the numbers? Gun would be secure and you'd actually be able to get to it.

What kind of power tools do your nieces typically use when they come over?

Are those combination safes secure enough? And is it cool to leave the gun inside the safe loaded?

I think your plan is sufficient in regards to extreme safety precautions but insufficient for a self defense situation as Todd mentioned. However, you should store your pistol and ammo the way you feel comfortable with and for whatever reasons.

I don't know if it's "cool" but it is certainly okay to do so. The coolness factor shouldn't weigh on your decision. :smt033

Depends on you and how you go about your business.

Another option that a lot of us use is carrying the gun on us. No need to worry about the kiddies getting to the gun that way; unless a small child can disarm you, in which case we will confiscate your guns and sell them to fund the forum and your Man Card will be revoked. And the bonus is you don't have to go running for the gun in the event that you need it because you already have it. :smt023

I have two young kids in the house. Yes they learn about gun safety but I still don't want them to have access to the guns in the house.

Quick combination and I'm in......otherwise nobody is getting in unless they steal the whole thing and go to work on it with some serious tools.
