I recently saw a YouTube video of a guy shooting IDPA. I thought "Now there's something that looks like fun"! My big problem, however, is that I have some vision issues - lets just say I dont hit 1" groups beyond 5yds :-(
Anybody got any ideas?
1. What would be a good action-oriented competition type for a blinding old guy?
2. What would be the best way to an introduction to competition shooting?
1" at 5 yards translates to 4" at 20 so whats the problem. Neither IDPA or USPSA require you to hit quarters. Both games use approx 18" x 24" silhouette targets with 20 yards being a long shot. If you miss the occasional head shot, so what. Head shots are usually at closer ranges.
I at 68 yrs. have 20x200+ uncorrected vision and have to work with blurry gun or blurry target but still manage to stay out of bottom place in our local USPSA shoots. My accuracy is suprisingly pretty good but speed suffers from excess weight, athritis and focusing time. It doesn't stop me from having fun and learning how to handle the guns a bit better. Last time out I ended up mid pack within all combined classes using a stock M&P40 with IWB holster.
Find and join an IDPA or USPSA/IPSC group and enjoy a fun sport while learning a thing or two on the way.
I just joined a weekly league at my local range. Its very friendly, and challenging (at least for me!).
See what is available to you locally and join in. As long as you don't expect to rank with the guys who are a lot more seasoned and you enjoy participating, you'll see a lot of improvement very quickly and will have a lot of fun.
TOF - thanks for putting it in perspective for me - I wasnt sure if IDPA or USPSA was accuracy-based or not. I have found a couple clubs in my area and as soon as I get a break I am going to go check things out!

Well 1" at 5 yards will not equate to 4" at 20 yards.
At longer distances, your flaws are magnified. What might be just slight movement at 5 yards becomes a much larger one at 15+ yards. 1" at 5 yards would equate to 2+" at 10 yards, 4+" at 15 yards and 8+" at 20 yards.
But a little practice can go a VERY long way.
Essentially your "Minute of Angle" (the measure of accuracy) doubles with each addition of equal distance (in this case 5 yards).
Uh Calculus I funked that in High school (spelling too) But can't curve the bullet like in the movies?? HA HA Yes you would miss , good old Kentucky wind-age works every time
