Need some info
I'm going to be 20 in 3 months... My friend told me I should go get a FID form from my police dept. now so I can get my fire arms ID card before I turn 21. He said by doing this it will shorten the time I will have to wait to get a handgun when I actually turn 21. All i want is a handgun, and maybe a shot gun....but mostly a handgun when I turn 21. No rifles for now.
Should I just wait or go get a form now?
I don't know about New Jersey since I don't live there. But the best thing you can do is start preparing yourself by taking training. Start with an NRA Basic Pistol course (they'll provide the guns), then work your way up as far as you can afford. A short drive to Connecticut will allow you to take advantage of training from Mas Ayoob and Chuck Taylor, for example, through Defense Associates (www.defenseassociates.com). You can likely get a loaner gun for the classes if you ask.
I believe there are also good trainers in New York, and there used to be a very active defense-oriented club on Long Island, and it may still be active. Pine Barrens, maybe?
It's never too early to start training. I took my first formal training twenty years ago when I was 16, through the aforementioned Defense Associates, and have pursued training ever since. It has served me well.
Medic: check with "robanna" I believe he and she are NJ natives. He appears to be newer with current info.
My opinion; exploring will allow time for thinking, enjoy the learning experiences.
Follow up and share your experiences.
I think Mike said it...
Get your training out of the way now that will shorten your waitime if you can file a certificate with your application...
Just make sure your training is recognized by the state of NJ...
I know not all counties in NY require safety training...and some that do don't recognize non NRA courses...
