New member with a question

Hello all,
Im VERY green to the whole wold of firarms and such so bare with me.
Im looking at purchasing my first handgun in the near future and im not sure which pistol i want.

I have looked at a few options that i have liked.

Glock 17
Beretta 90-Two
Ruger SR9

The SR9 seems cheap to me in comparison with the Glock and Beretta but what do i know.
Im somewhat leaning towards the glock or the beretta but im not sure which would be best for me.
Currently it is VERY difficult to get the 90-Two in 9mm so it woudl have to be the .40cal version vs the Glock 17.
I intend on using the pistol for range shooting, general messing about and self defense (hopefully never needed) but i dont know which would be best suited for the job.
Any help would be great.
Also if you can suggest another pistol to look at other than what i have here please feel free.

The Ruger is still new, so I'd pass on it until it's been out a while and all the bugs are out. As far as the Beretta and Glock, both are quality guns, which one do you like better as far as the trigger pull and grip angle ? A few other guns you should look at :
S&W M&P9
Sig P226, 228, or 229
Walther P99
Springfield XD9
H&K USP or USP Compact
Beretta M92

There are several things that make up liking a gun. The only way you can find them is shooting the different guns. I would recommend finding a Range that rents guns and ask them if you can shoot all the different guns they have. Also if you have friends with guns try to shoot theirs. Different people like different guns, and the only way you can find what is best for you is shooting the different ones. Good Luck!!! :)

Welcome. Ok I'll chime in here with some advice that was given to me and made sense.

If you're as green as I am/was, then a revolver might just be the best choice to learn about firearms with. It's easy, there's no takedown, it's a fun shooter, and unlike a semi-auto, if there's no bullets in the cylinder, it isn't going to fire accidentally.

I went to the store wanting either an HK USP or Sig Sauer P220 Elite and walked out with a S&W 686+ 7 shooter revolver.

I'm very happy with the choice I made. Either way, I would either hook up with an experience friend who can teach you about safely handling guns or take a few NRA lessons.

Some very good advice here. Just want to add a lot of ranges have programs for new and advance shooters. Some have leagues that welcome new shooters in as well and get them started on the right foot. Good luck and keep us in the loop on what's up.:smt1099

Your Beretta choice: Check in on the "Stoeger" Cougar 8000.
It is absolutely the "Beretta" with 'Stoeger' name on it. $329.00 or there about. It is being produced in Turkey.
Without question I wouldn't hesitate with any of your grouping.
I have a Ruger SR9 coming and a "Stoeger" Cougar 8000 in my future.
Shooting primarily Glocks the decision was difficult. I narrowed it down by choosing outstanding service from 'Ruger' and the reported info. about the Cougar.
Beretta will be the 'service center' for Stoeger Cougar.

If you're VERY green...I'd recommend taking a basic firearms course. But if you have already, please disregard this advice.

The benefits of taking a course will no longer make you green and it'll enable you to hone down on what type of gun your looking for.

I've taken one and tried out different guns and it took my 3 months after taking the course to purchase my first gun: Glock 35.

I personally like Glock, I carry a G19 & love it but some people don't care for them so you need to handle a few different models to see what best fits you. The G17 is used a lot in IDPA & does a goodjob. You might want to look a the FN's & Ruger P-95 DC. What ever your choice " BE SAFE" & learn your gun (takedown cleaning, & safety) then shoot w/ someone who knows what they are doing.

Welcome from the mountian top in North Carolina. First take a safety course, second try renting different guns or if you know any shooters try thiers out until you find one you like not just the first time but the third time you shoot it.
Third you are about to be infected by an uncureable afliction call gunitess, you will continue to find guns that might be a little better than the one you have. Good luck enjoy.

Tim if you are new to shooting I would do what P97, Glockamania & Tony Pasley said to do.
I did it the ronge way :[ I started shooting about 3 years ago,My first gun looked great and felt good good in my hand BUTT I did not shoot it before I paid for it :[ Now I have a gun I do not like and the trade in on it is $100.00 :[
2 years ago I went to some shooting classes and rented alot of guns.
now I have a XD 9mm and I love to shoot it :]

Rob's experience is very similar to a lot of first timers. Rob is a wise man.

I can only add to what's already been said, a big Welcome to The World of firearms. I hope you enjoy your involvement as much as I have. We desperately need a bunch of newbies such as yourself if we are to save the 2nd amendment and our basic rights. Don't waste much time before getting some of your friends involved too.

All I would add for a "new" shooter as yourself, is consider a reliable .22 automatic. No recoil to scare the s*** out of you and you'll learn the basic fundementals of sight alignment, trigger squeeze, proper grip, etc. Plus the ammo is cheap! Many like myself keep a .22 auto among the other guns just for change of pace range use or in the woods gun.

I've signed up for some courses with a local shop.

I have handled a few different guns and ive decided to go with the G17. Its very easy to maintain, i can get the 22 conversion for it if i decide to shoot something smaller and its very reliable.

Im sure i will begine to accumulate guns over the years but i figured this would be a great place to start.
