Dog training
Hey guys, I'm getting another Basenji in January and he or she is gonna be a household pet for the most part. I have no problem training dogs to sit, stay, etc, however I have no idea how to train them to hunt with. Basenjis are classified as a sight hound, but they are very good with their noses too. I would really love him to just tree coons and squirrels for me, I think bird hunting would be out of the question. Basenji's aren't big on the whole fetch/retrieve thing. If you guys could post a link to info regarding hunting training, I would greatly appreciate any info. Thanks in advance.

I researched Basenji on the web and this is the closest club I could locate for you in Ohio (if this is the correct state for you). I have three German Shorthair Pointers that I have trained specifically for bird hunting. I am currently in the process of force fetching one right now. The main focus on training is exposure and repetition.
Sorry, do not know much about Basenji's but try to get you pointed in a decent direction.
This club is also listed with the AKC which may also provide you with some direction.

If you've got to train a hunting breed to hunt... yer in trouble... :smt033
I use to hunt grouse with a black lab...
"Heel", and "Fetch" were all I needed. She did the rest by instinct, and was fantastic... Same for ducks, geese...
We'd take her for a walk, and she'd stay within 20 yards, and dive head first into every thicket she could find, them come out pissed when we didn't shoot everything she flushed...
But then, labs aren't hounds...

Mine are pissed every time I miss a shot which means they are usually mad at me all the time!
You should see what a GSP looks like when it rolls its eyes at you!!!!!:anim_lol:
