Looking for reliable, low priced gun shops. We live in Philly and are close to S. Jersey and Delaware. Want background checks completed so no private owner sales please.

Reliable is good....... Low priced not so good... When it comes to handguns the low priced ones just don't cut it...... You will never go wrong with a quality made time proven handgun..... There are plenty to choose from depending on your needs........

I think he was referring to the shop not charging a huge markup. I like the people at one LGS, but the store charges way too much.

To the OP, you could rent in a local gun store, try before you buy, then buy online and have shipped to a FFL store. The receiver will run the background checks, charge up to $35 for that, then there is the shipping cost, which can be as low as $0.00 up to $25.

People can suggest stores all day, but until you get somewhat of an education and focus on a particular gun then shop around it's all bit of a waste of time.

You can get away cheap but in the gun market, service after the sale is important and that doesn't come free.

French Creek Outfitters - West side of Phoenixville PA on Rte 23.. That's about as close as I'd get to a gun store near Philly. They have an indoor range too. You may want to call and see if they have rentals and instructors.

Cabela's between Newark and Wilmington DE on 95 may be another option.

As Spike12 posted, you do want to do some research first, but the above shops may be able to help.

If you simply want to save a couple $$$ you might wait for a gun show at the Oaks- Phillidelphia Expo Center. They have a few every year. In this case though, you really need to have a good idea of what you want.

Target Master in Chadds Ford was Ok, I was a big fan of Tanners as well.

French Creek was good to go as is Insite Firearms.

    2 Things.

First there are no cheap gun shops. Guns are expensive any way you cut it.
Second. You can't go out of state to buy a handgun. It's a violation of federal law.

    Partially true.

You can buy a firearm [ long-gun ] subject to both states' rules (Home vs Purchasing) without too much trouble. Remember it has to be legal in both states. No air rifles going to Jersey.

However to purchase a handgun, you need to have it transferred from Purchase state-FFL to Home state-FFL . [and it also needs to be legal in your state]
With shipping and fees it won't save you any money, but if its the ONLY place that has what you want (maybe a collector's piece/limited edition/REALLY nice used), it might be worth it.

Its also possible you could find a gun at Cabela's in Delaware and actually buy it at the Hamburg PA location without extra fees [you need to check on that.]
I did find a pistol in the WV-Wheeling store that Hamburg could get and I don't recall any extra fees to get it.

That depends on how much the gun costs and what the fees charged. Slickguns, a sponsor here, tends to have great deals. A Walther PPS M2 for $418, with free shipping. That's likely to be cheaper than what I would find on the LGS shelves.

You have to shop. Most places charge shelf price, so adding in background check fee and shipping fee (because many places will charge a shipping fee), it will cost more than shelf bought.

I know GunsAmerica is a bad place to shop. Their prices are no different than shelf price.
