I live in Upstate New York and might be able to give you some direction.

If you will be living in New York City, you will have an extremely tough if not impossible time getting a permit. Living upstate near the capital can take 4-6 months, as did mine. I would not recommend buying a handgun in Florida at this time if you plan on moving here in four months. You will not be allowed to bring it in the state until you have a New York state permit, as NYS does not recognize any other states' permit. Regardless if you want to hunt, use it for target practice or carry concealed, you will need a permit prior to purchasing a handgun or importing one that you already previously owned.

That is terrible I guess I'm going to have to apply for a position as a Forestry Ranger. They get to have guns, and will probably make my permit acquistion a hell of a lot easier. Thanks Bob.

as MR BALDWIN JR explained, NYC will be near impossible to get a permit in. In columbia county it was a 3 month waiting period (to get recomendations and approavals back), but i beliueve you must be a resident for 6 months prior to application. You will not be allowed to bring in a pistol from out of state. If you are outside of NYC and the Burrows, Long arm possesion is, well easy. IDK on NYC and the burrows (and frankly never want to- you can have them)

As to the encon positons, here is a good link, as I am thinking of job retraining myself. Not necessarily the easier way to go, but if that is where your proclivities lie.......
why are you moving here? (note: this is saidn with extreme cynicism, do not take offense, but why anyone would want to is begining to be a mystery to me, I'm thinking of bugging out.)

I've heard from a friend that it's really tough to get a permit in the city. I lived there for six years and I never heard of anyone having a permit.
