    hello from deep east texas

hello folks, my name is Justin. 28, and just bought my first gun today, a S&P Shield .40 cal. i took it out to the range today and was able to shoot about 30 shots with it. i'll have to get used to it, but so far so good. I look forward to articles and input from this site!

    Welcome, Justin.

I'm guessing that, if you have had no previous handgun experience, that you found your M&P Shield in .40 S&W to be quite a handful. It is a good subcompact pistol, but hardly what I would have recommended for a first gun. Unless you have had some fundamental instructions about grip, trigger pull, sight picture, and follow-through, I'm guessing that you probably scattered your thirty rounds pretty widely, at close range.

it will take some getting used to thats for sure. i seemed to be shooting a bit higher than what i was aiming at, but its not a hard gun to control for me. just need to practice and practice some more. hopefully i can break in the clips soon.

    Welcome Justin.

May I take the place of your uncle and suggest the following.

Start close and move your distance away as ability develops.

Shoot slowly and for accuracy. It's not as 'fun', I agree, but the skills are better developed when paying attention.

Don't wear your arms, hands and gun out too quickly. Ten good shots when you're paying attention brings more skill than 100 just 'flung down range'. If you ever feel like you just want to shoot the cotton-pickin' gun and leave, LEAVE. Don't bother shooting anymore.

And I wish you the best of skill and luck.
