    .45 ACP recommendations

I am looking at buying a .45 pistol. I think I'd like to get a 1911. I looked at the ruger, which I liked, but am looking for any recommendations or suggestions.

    Thanks!

What is your price range? I would recommend a Colt or Springfield, but there are other good brands. Many manufacturers produce 1911 variant from S&W to Sig Sauer, and most are pretty expensive. Some less expensive, but pretty decent pistols are Rock Island, Springfield GI Issue, etc. Depends on how much you're willing to spend.

What he said. I'll just add Girsan to the 'less expensive' list.

I don't mind spending a little more for quality. It's a gun that I will hopefully have forever.

I would recommend the Colt Series 70 1911, if you want a traditional 1911. You should be able to find one for around $1000. Colt makes a few variants ranging from traditional to tactical and championship custom models. If not, perhaps a Sig or Kimber.

Unless you just have to have a 1911, a Sig P220 is an excellent choice. You could do lots worse!

That Ruger SR1911 is a very good gun for the money. Classic style in every way. They've been out long enough now, that if you look hard enough and put on your dickering hat, you should be able to get one for under or right at $700.00 or so.

I'd go with a SIG vs. a Colt any day, if you don't want a Ruger.

I'd look into STI out of Texas or Sig Sauer. Some Kimbers are good too, as long as you feed it the right ammo.

I think of the Colt 1911 as "perfect". I have lots of respect for Sig... the little Sig P238 uses exactly the same operating motions as the Colt 1911...but if you want a handgun for a lifetime, you probably won't be disappointed by a traditional Colt.
