Hey everyone, my name's Shaun and I just signed up here.

I'm currently active duty US Navy and in a month or so I'll be changing stations. Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll be able to get a room mate. As a result, I think it's time to invest in my first gun.

I'm not too unfamiliar with guns as my close friends all have their own extensive collections (I'm from Texas), and we take them out to the range every now and then. Unfortunately I previously just shot without paying much attention to the subtle differences between the models. Because of this, I'm a bit lost when it comes to selecting my own.

I'll make sure to browse the forums for general first gun concerns, but if anyone's got advice for my specific situation, Id love to hear it. Basically, I'll be living alone in an apartment complex in Texas, and I have medium sized hands. I want this gun specifically for home defense. If I start to carry later, I'd rather just get a dedicated carry weapon, rather than find one gun that will sort of fill both roles.

That said, I don't want to start collecting guns as a hobby, so I'd rather pay a little extra now for a gun that is built well enough to work without issue for many many many years, rather than get something cheap that will wear out after some time. I think an upper limit on how much I'd be willing to spend is going to be around $900.

Since its home defense, I feel like night sights and a rail light would be nice, but I'm open to opinions to the contrary. I'm also not terribly concerned with having a large caliber, and I feel like a 9mm with a higher capacity would be favorable over a larger caliber with lower capacity.

I like the idea of a simple, straight forward model in terms of internal workings.

That's all I really have at this point, so any suggestions as far as models to research would be appreciated. It would be nice to have it narrowed down to three or four guns by the time I make it to a range and try them out.

Thanks again guys, looking forward to learning from everyone!

First off, welcome to the forum. :smt039

If I were in the market for a high-capacity 9mm, I'd be looking at either a Beretta 92FS or a SIG P226.

You simply cannot go wrong by buying either one and they will serve you well.

Either is available with a tactical rail and night sights.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions!

These suggestions look pretty good, I hadn't even seen the CZ before.

I had seen the p226 before and it was honestly the one I was leaning towards. I'm a little embarrassed to say that the fact that the mk25 is the "Navy" model has a pretty significant sway on my opinion. I'm an engineer, I like making cold, logical decisions, but I really want that damn anchor on my gun. That and the night sights and the corrosion resistance, since I'll be living by salt water for the next ten years of my life.

I'll keep researching until I make it out to a range. Thanks again!
