This may sound crazy to some, but I'd like to get involved with shooting medium ranges with a handgun (75yds + ). By no means taking on high powered rifles, but I'd like to see what I can do with a handgun.
With that in mind, my plan is to grab some optics and either bolt it in or hire a gunsmith to drill mounts.
I apologize for how general this next question is, but what should I look for in terms of handgun to accomplish this? I personally like DA/SA or DA only guns, not a big fan of SA only...but I'm open to the idea. Unfortunately I'm not made of money, so I'll need a gun that I can actually take to the range, shoot off a hundred rounds and not have to sell my car to support my hobby. After completing some research, folks were pretty happy with .357's over long ranges...not a cheap round by any means, but not crazy either.
Also, this doesn't need to be a gun optimized for home defense...this is purely for fun at the range.
For the gun, the max I could probably shell out is $800...then I'll still need to buy optics.
Any thoughts on the gun or information I can read about to help me make this decision?
