Help me choose a "temporary" gun please!

Hi all.
I'm about to apply for gun license in NY so it will be a while before I can purchase my first handgun but I thought I should start looking for one now.
I have already decided I will be getting a custom Wilson Combat CQB 1911 (.45 ACP) . It will end up costing me around $4,500 and I guess will take some time to get it built.
In the meantime I'm kind of torn between HK45, H&K USP45 (both full size and .45 ACP) and a S&W M&P9 (9mm).

So what do you recommend for a beginner? I've been renting guns at indoor ranges for a while so I'm not new to shooting, only new to owning a gun.

PS I'm only planning to use the guns at a range and possibly get into competitive shooting. Not for carrying.

I have the M&P and love it. That said, with our new legislation here in NY, buying any of the double stacks you have listed will be difficult to obtain I believe, as no 7 round mags are made for them, and after April 15, you can not get 10 rounders.
I considering a RAI 1911 Compact, even though I was getting away from 1911s, as a carry and IDPA CDP gun for this State. I mean, of I can only carry 7, they will most likely be .45!

Your temporary selection is a good one, but your best friend is what you have already been doing; renting guns at ranges. This should really answer your questions the best... far better than anyone on this site can do. Asking others opens the door to our own personal preferences and biases, whereas renting and shooting handguns at a range escapes that obstruction, allowing you to concentrate on what you are experiencing at some instant time.

If you are of a mind, you might consider increasing your scope of trial guns and include some other popular brands. Springfield XD and Glock come immediately to mind as well as the Taurus and Beretta 92 series and some Sig Sauer selections. So many possibles. If this temporary gun is to be a keeper, stay with quality and you don't have to pay an arm and a leg to get something that is very good, very dependable, and will give many years of service. Since you are going to go with a high end 1911, you may want to think about an inexpensive, but good, 1911 now. Springfield Armory has an excellent selection here as do some other mainstream manufacturers. You could step up a little and go with a Kimber, too and have a fine 1911 for your temporary piece.

Thanks, I was actually just thinking about a lower end 1911 to start. Also If I decide to start competing I want a 1911 that I can dry fire a lot and I don't want to do that with my Wilson Combat.
I guess I might end up with a Kimber or a Colt XSE for now

PS I will still buy a H&K lol

$4,500 Wilson!!!!

Why dont you buy HK45, a USP45, and a M&P 9mm for that much money! Or a good AR! Lol

No I know you how feel though mane, you gotta get what you want, even if it is a ridiculous price!
Well I'm actually planning to get them all... almost.. Eventually I will have:
HK45 or USP45
H&K P7M8
S&W M&P9
Beretta 92
Wilson Combat CQB custom and/or Supergrade custom
And 1-2 other 1911s most likely Colt and Kimber.

As for AR15, I'll wait on that with all those bullshit gun control laws, I do want one eventually.
Also a Benelli shotgun =D

I just hope we win the fight with Demonrats
