I turn 21 in two months and I've always been very interested in handguns and I want to purchase one. I really just want it for shooting at the range and learning how to shoot before I move on to a better gun. I have done a little research on the Bersa Thunder .38 and the ruger p95 which are in my price range of around $300. I want a semi automatic gun and not a revolver. Does anyone have any advice on either of these guns or any others in this category? Also does anyone recommend a certain caliber for my first gun?
If this is for purely range time how about a .22.Ruger has a great semi and would be perfect to learn how to shoot effectively. All handguns require the same shooting skills.Learn on a .22 and then step up.It is also a very fun one to shoot.A .22 can give you alot of pure enjoyment.

I got a p95 as my first gun. Ive carried it daily for over 2-3 years. I love it. 9m ammo is second cheapest aside from .22. Like the previous poster said if its just a range gun get a .22 it's cheapest to shoot.
A good example of this is the sig p226 and p229. You can get the upper receiver and barrel for a 22, 40, 9, and 357. Although it's expensive. I believe it's worth it.
