What type of advice would you give for private purchase in Michigan. I know I need to make sure the gun serial # matches the safety certificate, but is there any other important things I need to check for to make sure the seller is truly registered to the gun. What about sales receipts? Is there a website specific to private gun sales in Michigan?

I can tell you this much from personal experience. Before I got my CPL a friend of mine from Indiana gave me a S&W Sigma 9mm. I took it to the Sheriff's office to get it registered and they took the serial number of the gun and entered it into their system. While that was going on I had to fill out an application for the license. One question was "Where did you buy this gun?" I talked to one of the deputies and asked how I should respond and he said I should write "It was a gift from out of state". Apparently that's a catch all easy answer for people to use so they will register the gun. Anyway before I left I had the registration after they checked out the gun's background and mine.

PS I've never heard of a safety certificate and you don't need a receipt
It's pretty easy if you have a CPL. Anyway, you can download a form off the net if you google "how to sell a handgun in MI. The form is really self-explanatory.
