How has your hunting gone this year?
My family has had a decent year, hunting. My 7 year old grandson shot a small buck and a doe, his first ever, during youth season, using an H&R HandiRifle, in .223, with the new Barnes loaded ammo. Both were one-shot kills, so we were very proud of him.
His older brother, 9 yo, only got one this year, but he was a monster for our area, a 10 point that measured 20" between the main beams. By comparison, his father (my SIL) and I both shot very nice 9 points that were our personal best bucks, and neither measured over 16". He was using an old Remington Model 788, that had no magazine, which effectively reduced it to a single shot, in .243. He had to take a very hard shot, with the buck facing him, from 110 yards. He nailed him in the base of the neck, and dropped him clean...by far, the best shot on the best deer, of any of our circle of hunting acquaintances. His dad and I were very proud of him for staying calm and getting the job done right.
In addition to the 9 point, I also shot a 'cull' buck, because I just love to eat them, that was a large fat deer with a very ugly 3 point rack. I'm going again, this last week of the season, because I have room in the freezer for another one, probably a cull, again, unless a real monster screws up and stumbles past me. I use a 45 year old Model 70 Winchester, in .30-06, with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40. My other family members have finished deer hunting and are after ducks, now, and having good success.
I'll be heading out to far west Texas, in January, for the tail end of late dove season and some blue quail, hopefully, and probably do some squirrel hunting when I return home. Feral hogs, of course, are always targets of opportunity, in Texas, and can be shot any time of day or night, all year round, so I'll have my eyes peeled for them, too.
How has your hunting been?
No hunters, huh? That's pretty amazing for a gun forum.
Sorry Bisley. I just saw this. I went deer hunting and had a couple of shots and misses thanks to a messed up scope (my fault). I'm not a bad shot and about lost my mind until we got back to camp and did some bore sighting after my second failed attempt. I was about 2 feet off. Shameful I know.

Broad, thick tines and very evenly distributed side to side.
Overall a good trip and I got to see a surprising amount of game. Wild turkeys and a large herd of Antelope several times over the course of 2 weeks during deer season. Rather unusual and rare to see in the woods in Eastern Oregon. Overall a good year just need to make sure my gear is squared away this next season. Sounds like you and yours had a good season. Good to know.
Ive shot seven doe's so far this season here in SC. Most of them was with a Marlin XL7 30-06, but two of them got the Marlin 45-70. Our season is over at the end of the month. Its hogs after that.....
