Go down to the range and sign up for a class and go and buy yourself a 9mm Ruger automatic. When you get done with that you'll have a feel for what you want and some knowledge to back it up. Good luck.
Hey Everybody
I'm looking into purchasing a handgun to use at a nearby shooting range but know very little concerning what type of gun to purchase except that I do not have much to spend on it. I have never owned nor shot a handgun before but have always been intrigued by them and have a general knowledge of firearms. I'm sure others are in the same situation so I will look at other posts for information but I would appreciate any advice on what a good first handgun should be.

Welcome from the mountian top in N.C.
Find a good instructor, take the basic safety course. Find a range where you can rent different handguns so you will know what will work best for you. I can say what is best for me only. Good luck, happy learning and safe shooting.
Please excuse my bad manners. I forgot to welcome you to the site. So here's a bigWelcome!![]()

thanks for all the responses. the range by me isn't staffed so it doesn't offer any courses. but i was jus looking around at different pistols and i was wondering what kind of reputation the beretta U22 neos has. its kinda futuristic looking but its pretty inexpensive.
Welcome aboard from the sandpile.
Ahh, the old "Where do I start" question. In the General Semi Auto section (top area) you'll see this question addressed by Shipwreck. Start there.
You don't say what you want a gun to be used for. Plinking, and general recreation? The Neos will be fine. But, you'll want to add to your collection very soon.
I started with a .357 magnum revolver. Because it can be downloaded to light .38 specials, to start with, and later loaded up for P.D. it seemed to be a good place to start, for me. Your needs may be different.
You're on the right track just by being here.
Good luck, read on.
