new member from hawaii

wassup everyone,
Im a new memeber to the forum here in honolulu, hawaii. I grew up arounf firearms.....my dad is a huge firearms enthusiast (mainly miltary assault rifles...AK 47, AR 15, etc). I've spend a good part of my life at range with my dad or at home learning how to maintain weapons, load ammunition, etc. Just recently caught the bug to start my own collection. While I love my dad's collection of rifles, I felt it would be best to invest in a handgun for sport as well as personal protection. So while I have an AR 15 sitting in my closet waiting to be modified, I'll postpone that project until my handgun jones has dwindled (if it ever does)...

Here's a question that most every other new member has asked....What would be a good first purchase be for the novice handgun enthusiast. I have read thread after thread about the XD's, and my dad has a number to 1911's...any advice from the experts?

Aloha! I was in Honolulu in '98 for my honeymoon. Beautiful place.

Guns are like shoes. One size does not fit all and what is comfortable for one person is not for another. The simplest thing to tell you is get a gun that feels comfortable in your hand and that you can shoot well. Ammo for the 9mm is cheaper than .45, so that may be a consideration; you can afford to shoot more. Other than that, I say rent a bunch of guns and go with what you like.
