Welcome from down in the swamp GypsyBill & Jennifer. If you want a economical and fun gun for the range and plinking around the Ruger Mark's are hard to beat. Good luck.
Dropping in to say hey... not new to handguns (or most weapons for that matter) but new to the semi-auto lane... carried a Taurus 605CH for 11 years and recently sold it to buy a Glock 23, then a Springfield XD 9 Subcompact and then a Bersa 380 (well the XD and the Bersa was for the wife as she didn't like the "snap" of the 40s&w... we are in the process of breaking in the XD and the Bersa, both only having about 200-250 rnds thru them and we are already looking at a .22LR (Ruger, Browning, Walter, Smith) target pistol for more fun at the range..
We both have our Pistol Permits (as CHLs are known in this part of the world). I had a CHL when I lived in TX, this is her (Jennifer) first.
Anyway, I found this site from the Glocktalk site and like pistols, you can never have too many forums (information expands the experience)..

Thanks for the welcome folks... will be here for awhile... and Baldy, Jennifer was oohing and aahing over a stainless Mark III 6 7/8" with Cocobolo grips... (me thinks I have created a monster here... until about a month ago she had never fired a handgun... now she is the one waiting for the weekend to hit the range)
Welcome.
