Welcome to the forum.![]()
Hi -
I am filling out the forms for my pistol permit here in Niagara County, New York. As with anything you are new at, I have been given a lot of advice as how to go about it.
Can any of you guys give me any information that might help?
Are there any big no-no's?
My Dad wants his collcection to stay in the family, I am seeing to that. I have been told that if Dad puts it in his will that I am getting my permit, the police will hold his collection until I get it. I will let you guys give me the final advice I will be using, as I am getting this process started this week.
Thanks!!! Deg

Need advice asap
I don't live in New York, so I can't tell you what the laws are... but, I'm pretty sure that if your father passes away and leaves you his gun collection, it's yours and law enforcement (Police) can't do anything about. In other words, they're not going to kick in your door and take your guns. Again, I don't know NY laws, so wait around...someone may come along soon that will know more...
Of course, if you have a Felony on your record you can't have or own a firearm.

Sorry but I'm on the opposite side of America from you so advice from me would be worthless. Welcome to the forum though.
Thanks for the input.
I will be leaning on you guys in the future.

Well, here's a start:
http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/NYSL.pdf
It says, in part:
Beyond this, you may need to contact an attorney.POSSESSION—HANDGUNS
A license is needed to possess a handgun in one’s home or place of business. Application is made to the licensing officer of the city or county where the applicant resides, is principally employed, or where his principal place of business as a merchant or storekeeper is located. An alien may obtain a pistol license if he or she meets these requirements. The determination whether to grant the license is completely within the discretion of the licensing officer. However, the licensing officer must state specifically and concisely in writing the reasons for a denial. A denial can only be overturned in court if the denial is shown to be arbitrary and capricious.
