Hello from Rhode Island

Dropping in to say hello from the good ol' state of RI.. (yeah right). I just bought a new P250C 9mm on Saturday (9/15) and picked it up this past Sunday(9/23). Gotta love RI's "7 Day Anger Period".. I've already found a wealth of great info on this forum and want to say "Thanks" and I look forward to talking with you all soon.

I practiced for RI CCW Qualifications with a Beretta .45 for the past month, and couldn't get higher than a 145 out of 300 possible.
RI CCW is 3 Rounds of 10 shots each, for a max of 300 at 25 yards out. 195 is the needed score to qualify for CCW.

Monday, the first 30 rounds through the P250, I scored a 214, 2nd 30 rounds I scored a 234! I love this thing! Feels so much better in my hands, trigger pull despite being a DAO vs the Berettas DAO/SAO was much smoother and to my liking. I've been used to shooting revolvers, so this is a good SA fit for me.

Welcome...it only takes three days to be pissed off up here....I CCW qualified with a Beretta 84fs...we had to use a standard FBI body target.....shot a 150 out of 150......don't think I could have done it with a larger caliber, but I usuallt shoot .40....I guess anything is possible.

Haha, that's awesome. a friend of mine who is a North Providence detective said he has to qualify yearly on an FBI Body target. I don't know why they don't have the civilian CCW qualifications on the same target. Plus, 25 yards? I get the fact that they want you to be accurate to eliminate collateral damage in the event you have to use it, but at the same time, the average engagement distance is what 7-15 yards?

I don't get the "Pissy Period" thing.. I have other firearms, a car, multiple softball and baseball bats, crowbars, pneumatic nail guns, a kitchen full of knives.. what the hell difference does it make if I have to wait 7 days to buy a gun? Ridiculous..

Actually, our qualification was a timed qualification........start with empty firearm and mag.......5 shots from 7 yds. in under a minute, then 10 shots from 7 yds. in under a minute, only being able to load 5 at a time...then it was the same thing at 15 yds. for a total of 30 shots.....not a state requirement, a class requirement. All shots being center mass. I guess waiting periods differ all over the country...if I purchase a firearm on Monday at 10:00 am, I pick up my firearm on Wednesday at 10:00 am. Only takes my FFL a minute to do the backround check. It is what it is. I am grateful, that it seems easier here, than alot of other states, and some are just plain ridiculous..........the shooting part of my qualification was to also obtain a Utah permit, which requires qualification. I needed the Utah permit, to make sure that I was covered in at least 32 states, since they are still working on reciprocity issues with my state and others. Between fingerprints, permits, firearm purchases, and everything else....I have been checked so many times. it would make your head spin.

I guess I am pissed off in a continuous mode as I take my firearm home immediately.......Hi and welcome.....great choice on the P250 , love mine......JJ

What is are differentiations of "class" for a qualification? In RI there is "The Blue Card" which is the passing of a written handgun safety test; this allows you to purchase a handgun/revolver. Then there's the CCW permit which is self explainitory. There's no "class" per-se. The only difference depend on whether you submit your CCW app to the Chief of Police of your city of residence or the Attorney General. I forget which is which, but the permit issued by one of the two allows you to bypass the "Anger Period"

Actually the "average" extreme encounter where you are forced to use deadly force is well under seven yards. I do drills from three yards to seven yards, then throw in some rounds at 50 feet and 75 feet. But most of my drills are in the four to seven yard range.

Question. Since you must qualify with your handgun, does that also mean that your permit is linked to a specific handgun? If you qualify with your new Sig could you at some point, carry an M&P or a Glock or a revolver?

Anyway, congrats on your new pistol. How are folks in your area regarding citizens carrying firearms? Is it accepted or is the general attitude against the carrying of a defensive arm? As you can see, I live in the South and in my area, we just don't see any problems carrying concealed or openly. Not to say there hasn't been the rare occurrence but for me, in over seventeen years of carrying, the last over five years doing it openly, I have only had one negative encounter. And that was from a civilian in a McDonald's who claimed he was a retired LEO. Judging from his accent, he was not a native Virginian... more like someone from the northeast.

Here in Wsconsin, there is a 3 day waiting period on all handguns. When you obtain your CCW, it is not connected to any particular firearm. It is issued through the attorney general's office. As far as classes, we are required to have at least 4 hrs. of some type of classroom training. The only reason you would have to have a qualification shoot, is if you apply for another state CCW, as in my case, Utah. Here, Utah requires fingerprinting, and Florida requires fingerprinting and qualifying shoot. Many people up here got there Utah or Florida out of state permit, so as to be covered in different states, due to the fact that Wisconsin is still working on reciprocity agreements with other states. This way, you are covered for travel in at least 32 states. Alot of people from here, go to Florida often. Then there is a cost issue. I believe, and don't quote me, renewal of a Florida CCW is $115 for three years. Utah is minimal, I believe it's between 0-$30 for five years. There could be changes in the length of class time here, as some believe that 4 hrs. isn't enough. Veterans are exempt from the class time, as are people who have taken DNR hunter safety classes. Just goes to show you how hokey some laws can be. I have spoken to vets up here, who tell me that they have never fired a handgun in the military, and hunters, who have told me that they have never fired a handgun period. Open carry has always been legal here, but personally, I don't do it, for the fact that I don't feel like being sprawled out on the pavement, while they check my license. When law enforement sees a firearm on your side, they tend to be very nervous, even though it's been legal for ever. Hoping that will change in the future, but for right now, I'm just glad we have CCW. It just passed last year on NOv. 15th, and it made for a lot of happy campers here in Wisc.

SouthernBoy - In RI, the only stipulation to qualifying with a certain handgun pertains to caliber. If you qualify with a 9mm, then you're not allowed to CCW any larger than 9mm. This is why I was hoping to qualify eventually with a .45, so I could carry basically anything I feel like carrying with the exception of a DE or S&W .500 lol. Also, I'm not completely aware of the "acceptance" of CCW/Open here. I don't think you can open carry period as far as I know. EDIT: It says on the page linked below, "Open Carry: Prohibited in all public areas unless one has an attorney general-issued permit."

berettabone - In RI, you have to complete the application, pass the qualify requirements, get a photo id picture taken, show 2 forms of residence identification AND get fingerprinted.. It's $40 for 4 yrs I think.

Welcome aboard. I understand why you want to qualify with the .45 but, from what you have posted and a look at the targets it looks like that Sig and you get along better. So go with what you use best, as has been stated repeatedly, a hit with a .22 is a lot more effective than a miss with a .500.

sgms, thanks for the welcoming. I agree about "use what I get along with" and those target pics were my first 2 times shooting the P250. Hopefully soon those groups will get smaller and closer to center. I'd like to get the .45 caliber xchange kit for it, so I can practice with that caliber but still have the size and feel of the P250. At least then I can carry whatever.

Hi DuHast - Im new to the FORUM and from Smithfield, RI - wanted to say hi - Not sure this is proper protocol but was wondering if you had any recommendations for firearms instruction (basic and advanced). Ive wanted to get involved with local ranges but want a solid foundation in gun safety, proper care and handling, range etiquette etc. Im actually going to contact one of my cousins who ironically (in reference to your first post) is a NP detective - too funny.
I just purchased a CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical for HD and target, in addition to S&W M&P.22LR for target - and yes, Im on the last couple days of the 7-day waiting period. Best -

STXBUOY - It's funny you're from Smithfield, as I work right off 44. The best thing I can recommend for firearms instruction is to take some classes at AFS in North Attleboro. Google "American Firearms School". They have classes from beginner handgun safety all the way up to advanced tactical and NRA Instruction Certifications. I am going to be taking some classes there as well, dispite having a general knowledge of firearms. I was in the Cranston Police Dept. Explorers group when I was younger (where I fired my first gun - Colt Python .357 Rev), and my Dad's a Lifetime NRA member and was in Sniper School in the military wayyyyy back, he taught me A LOT.. So I've been around them for a long time, but some formal training is always a good thing to have under your belt.

Someone in Smithfield is building an indoor range off 116 in the industrial park near Box Seats, at least that's what I read in the Smithfield newspaper. I can't wait for it to open, as it will be nice to be able to go there and shoot in the cold dead of winter. It sure beats going to my friends house and shooting in the snow.. I thought I got the shakes shooting after a Starbucks coffee.. nope, shooting while shivering and not being able to feel your hands is atrocious.

Hey thanks. I just called them and they were great on the phone. Feedback on-line is great as well. I spoke to Christian, who told me about a new class for handgun dismantling and cleaning - which is valuable for someone with little experience. So I'll be in that one in addition to the basic through intermediate handgun classes offer. And I saw the classes focused on the AR-15 beginner through advanced as you noted. I'd really like to get one of those. Saw one at D&L and came close to just buying it, but held off - think it was a Ruger.
And yes, my wife told me about the indoor range as well. I live on Log Road so thats really close - very exciting! I'll let you know how I make out at AFS.
Thanks again for your recommendation. Oh and speaking of Starbucks, since you read the paper ( I probably should), did you hear about the new one opening up in the buildings behind the Sovereign Bank on 44. Supposed to put in a Sienna there too. (my wife keeps me current)
