This is such a subjective thing and so many opinions that will cover a wide range, read and find a range that rents some and try and find what suits you best. Any quality firearm from a reputable manufacturer that you are willing to train on and become proficient with......GO HOKIES !!!!!!......JJ

Welcome, fellow Virginian.
Best advice is to go to a range that rents and try some guns out to find out what fits you best.
If you are in NoVa, try Sharpshooters in Lorton, VA.They have best selection of rentals and they have a lot of guns for sale including used guns.
Or, try Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly, VA if that is closer. Good selection. Not as good selection for sale.
Down in Stafford, VA there is The Range which has a small selection.
In Richmond, go to Dominion Range on Terminal Road. Excellent selection of rental guns.
In Hampton Roads area, go to Lynnhaven Shooting Range in Va Beach. Good selection although strange range rules: Can't fire faster than 4 seconds per round...wierd.
I don't know of one in Roanoke, although I have heard there is one down there.

Lots of good training instructors work out of the NRA range in Fairfax, VA.
I recommend IDPA matches to practice your skills.

For a start on the guns, look at the S&W M&P, the Kahr PM40, the Cz 2075 RAMI, the Sig 2022 or P250, SPringfield XD,
Walther PPQ and of course the Glock. Have fun trying them out....its worth the money. If they don't have a .40 in everything, try the 9mm...they will be essentially the same gun.

Welcome, and good luck.
PM me if you need more info.
