Hello to All - I will soon be purchasing my first firearm - for home defense. The question of shotgun vs. handgun is on the table. I have been doing research for weeks now and am still undecided, and will likely remain so until I make a trip to the gun store, then to the upcoming gunshow. For sure, I will be posting questions, and in advance of that, thank those who have gone this path before me for their experience, advice and patience with a firearm novice.

If the weapon will only be used for Home Defense, a shotgun would be the best choice. Very simple to use, don't really have to aim, just point and pull the trigger. Most BG's will leave your residence the moment they hear that sound of a pump shotgun bing having a round pumped into the chamber. It's a sound you can not mistake for anything else. Very few individuals would want to try to enter a room once hearing that noise.

If later on you decide to get your CCW permit and look for a handgun, look at the Springfield Armory XD40 Sub Compact. I just purchased one about two weeks ago and it is a great weapon. If you want less recoil you could look at the SA XD9 SC, both are great handguns, but the 40 packs more punch.

Welcome to the forum! :smt023

Shotgun is best HD weapon IMO, but I wouldn't use anything just for the "sound effects". Besides that, my guns are all chambered. I'd hate to throw that perfectly good round on the floor.

Hello Anubis.

Also new from Florida. I assume that you are talking about the show at the Central Florida fairgrounds coming soon. I will also be attending. Seems it might be the only place to find decent amounts of .380ACP.

By the way, don't underestimate a good home alarm system as well. I keep a remote for the alarm right next to my HD firearm that way I can trip it manually if necessary. Now that's a sound effect that might work.

EM - Looking forward to the CF show. Just returned from Shoot Straight in Apopka. Had read alot of not so good reviews about the place and the staff being attittudinal, but had to go there to see for myself. Got hooked up with Jay and he was the best. I explained what I knew and didn't know and he took it from there. Very patient with me (I'm new to this), clear and straight replies to my endless questions and very patient. Was thinking shotgun for HD, but now and just a hair more leaning to handgun. Handled about 7 HGs, mostly 9s and 40s. Liked the Beretta Px4 best, due to easier slide disengagement and how it felt. Springfield was nice but rack release was really tight.

I've always had a good experience with Shoot Straight in both Apopka and Casselberry. I have experienced no noticable "attitude" from any of the folks that I have worked with. I've bought about five or six firearms from them. They even handled my mailorder USP compact when they couldn't get me one in the time frame that I wanted. Shoot Straight also traditionally have a large presence at the gun show. Normally their "booth" (it is actually about a 1/4 of the space) is located in the larger building off to the left as you walk into the building.

Good folks. Very knowledgeable for the most part.

I bought a 1st edition PK380 from them recently and they threw in 100 rounds of .380acp (and that was after reducing the price - so I have no complaints)

PX4 is a nice firearm. The Beretta based Stoeger Cougar 8045 is on my wish list currently. It's mags should be compatible with my CX4 in .45 (and maybe we'll finally get a hi cap mag for same)

Sounds like they did right by you. The reason I went there is because you always hear more of the negative things - I'm glad I went and the experience was positive. So, for all you out there doing research, remember that opinions are just that - opinions. Go check it out for yourself.
