    noob from the adirondacks

    hey all,

    my name is Jake and i'm from the northern Adirondacks (Saranac Lake region). I'm a car enthusiast and an avid outdoorsman who hunts and fishes and hikes and all that good stuff. I'll soon be moving to Alaska for a pharmacy job (i'll be a pharmacist as soon as i take/pass my boards in june). I've decided i want to get a handgun as a sidearm while hiking in Alaska as added protection against grizzlies. of course, my first step in protecting myself will be education, not just firepower! It might just be nice in case something goes wrong... but i'll be posting more about that in the "new to handguns" section.

    looking forward to becoming an active member of the handgun community!

    I'm sure you will like the forum. There's all kinds of great stuff to read in here. I would think that a bog bore small barreled revolver would fit the bill for you up there. Something like a 44 and up. There are a couple "Alaskan" models out there built just for what you are looking to get into. Check out a few of the revolver forums. You should find the info you are looking for

    Whoa, fighting off grizzlies, yeah I echo the opinions already state about a revolver .44 or larger.
