WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!
You have quite a few options out there. Best thign to really do is to find a local range that rents guns and try out a few. What caliber are you looking for? Full size? Compact? Polymer frame? lots of options.
Hi all! I'm from West Michigan and I'm rather new to the whole gun world...I just have a .22 rifle that I really enjoy. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to shoot a friend's Taurus .44 Raging Bull (way too big for my tiny hands!). Now, I'm determined to get my own handgun and become proficient with its use.
I've actually been a lurker on this site for a couple of weeks without joining...trying to figure out what kind of gun I wanted, what brands were the most reliable, etc. I figured it was about time I stopped observing, though, and joined the conversation.![]()
(and, yes, I've read the forum guidelines)

Hello from Ct. I'm also new.

Thanks for the welcome! An acquaintance of mine has recommended a range, and their rental rates seem pretty reasonable. I want a gun that I'll enjoy shooting, and one that will be highly effective against an intruder in my home...one that's loud enough to tick off my busy-body neighbor wouldn't be unwelcome, either (hahaha). I've been mostly looking at double-action revolvers. I like the relative simplicity of them, and I think it's the direction I'd like to go with my first handgun. I want a .357 Mag because it would allow me to practice with a cheaper round (.38 sp), but still use a larger round for home defense. I've heard fabulous things about Rugers, so I'm leaning towards the GP100 or the SP101. I'd like a smaller frame since my hands are small - I could barely get my finger on the trigger of my friend's .44, even after it was cocked. Since I'm not planning to concealed-carry anytime really soon, I'm not looking to get a sub-compact or light-weight gun. I'd rather have the longer barrel (and accuracy) and extra weight to absorb some of the recoil from the .357 mag rounds. Sorry, that was a lot of information.![]()
Welcome to the forum!
Guess I can skip the other part.
Welcome to the forum. Just a suggestion, since you are looking for a longer barrell and extra weight you might want to stick with the GP100. The SP101 will be a little small.
