Welcome from IA! I used to live in PA, where do you live? If you're on the eastern side of the state I know most of the good shops and ranges.
Best advice I can give is to find a place that rents pistols and shoot as many as you can to see what you like and what you don't. After you decide on what model to get and you buy it, shell out a couple $$$ on a good holster and belt and take an NRA basic pistol class or a brief period of instruction from the range guru.
