Hello all. I am a true newbie to the world of handguns (I don't even own one yet). I will be purchasing my first handgun in a matter of weeks. I would like to own a 40 cal semi auto and a 357 mag revo. A co-worker mentioned that he wants to sell his Ruger 357 mag gp100ss 4". He mentioned it friday as we were about to leave work. He said he has owned it for a few years now and that it is in great condition, sounds like he has fired less than 1000 rds with it. I would like some feedback on what to look for in a quick visual inspection (remember I am an extreem newbie to handguns), also what would be a fair price for this gun. I am also considering buying a Taurus 840 or 24/7 pro in 40 cal and I would like to hear from anyone that has owned a newer Taurus. I know that they have a spotty history when it comes to workmanship and reliability however, it appears as though they have improved in recent years. Please be easy on me, as I mentioned I am very new to handguns.

Welcome to the forum and the world of handguns. I am fairly new to this as well as I bought my first hand gun about 5 months ago.
I would definitely recommend you and your friend go to the range and shoot the Ruger your friend has to sell. see if it fits your hand and your intentions for owning a handgun. concealed permit, home defense...
see ya around.
Welcome to the forum! I also recommend that you go to the range and shoot your friend's Ruger. I have no experience with Ruger revolvers, but I have only heard good things. Make sure it fits your hand well and that you actually LIKE shooting it before you buy it. As far as the Taurus 840 or 24/7, I don't know much about Taurus semi's, but I own a Taurus revolver that is first rate.
Good luck in your decision!
Somewhere on the internet is an article on what to look for when evaluating a revolver for purchase. I don't a link to give you, but I'm sure you can google/bing/dopile it yourself.
I recently put up a review on the 24/7, so you might look at that.
thank you all. will try to get my co-worker out the the local range. and will post any further info in the appropriat forum (ruger, or taurus).
