Welcome!
Where I live in NY (Onondaga County), you have to pay $10 for the application paperwork, then wait 2 months to take a handgun safety course, wait another 3 months for an appointment to submit your handgun license application ($141), then wait another 3-6 months to receive your handgun license which will most likely be restricted by a Democratic judge to a "sportsman" license.
Why do I still live hear you ask? I am asking myself the same question...
At least I don't live in the UK...
Welcome!
Welcome from Orange County. Its the same down here except Republican judges are the ones issuing only "Hunting Target" licenses.
I almost forgot, down here we have to have 3 friends take time out of their day and have a form noterized to attest to our good character.
Welcome from Northern Colorado.
Time to move.Former Chicagoland resident here.

Welcome from an ex New Yorker now a Texan (for quite a while)!
Welcome from Big Sky Country.
Welcome to the site!
I had to have 4 non-relative personal references that live in my county sign my application and they will also be required to fill out and sign a personal reference questionnaire that will be mailed to them once I can actually submit my application.
Relocating to TX has definitely crossed my mind more than once as I could easily transfer to an office in San Antonio, but would be hard to leave behind all my and my wife's friends and family in CNY. So instead, I will fight the good fight: already joined the NRA, contacted my representatives to support certain gun legislation, and spreading the good word trying to get everyone I know to apply for their CCW if they have not already.

Welcome from Ulster county NY.. I didnt have to take a handgun safety course but everything else is about the same..THey told me the judge would have his decision back to me in 3-6 months and I recieved almost exactly 3 months after i handed in all my paperwork,,But it was worth the wait..
Welcome to the Forum
Welcome from a fellow new yorker. I'm working on getting my ccw too, in Erie county.
Welcome from Monroe County. I didn't have to take a course( although I did on my own after receiving my permit to carry) nor do I have any restrictions on my CCW. I did have to list 4 character references and the sheriffs department did contact all of them as well as my spouse, I guess they wanted to make sure she was alright with it. All and all it took 6 months to the day for my permit to arrive. This is a great website, with plenty of information and contributors willing to help.
Welcome from North Carolina
It's rather odd that the process is a bit different in each county of NY. Here in Niagara is similar, my wait was about 8 months due to a fingerprinting screw up. No restrictions though, and you've got to love the perpetual license. No renewals! I'm surprised the Governor hasn't noticed that yet.
You could always move a few miles south to Cortland County......
Apparently our judges are pretty fair compared to you guys, but I'm sure that is all because of Syracuse. And we don't have to take our safety course until after we get our license. You have one year after issuance to take your NRA approved course.
I wonder if every state has such differences in their county gun rules. NY seems to be very different for each county you go to.....
I had to collect the 4 signatures from non relatives in the county, and I wanted exactly 6mos......... but now that it is all done looking back the process was not all that horrible...... granted some states are a breeze compared to NY but at least we are not New Jersey......
