What is the best combat handgun in use today?

What is the best combat handgun in use today? By this, I mean what is the most accurate, reliable, and economical handgun to arm a large body of people with?
My answer is a Glock 17 and my reasons are it is totally reliable, the ammo is in use all around the world, and Glock gives large discounts on volume sales. Lastly, I throw out the 40 S&W because the ammo is expensive and snappy to fire.
My favorite handgun is a 1911 in 45acp; why didn't I respond with a 1911 pistol? I have never had a malfi with a G17 and the G17's manual of arms is simpler.
Richard: Sir; my understanding; for the word 'best' becomes a relative term.
Each situation requires circumstance, situation, relevance. You can walk into about any USA "country store" and purchase ammo. .22-.38-.357-.44-.45-270-30/30 30-06 Through out the world this will not work. In a battle field, what ever you pick up when you need something else; USA has created 1 dominate battle field round; this eliminates part of the problem created by 'war situation' for USA
The 9mm round is world wide, will that make it the best?
As I prefaced; 'best'; becomes at best; ammo/equipment availability at the time of need. Too; being able to pick up something off the ground to fix your weapon; will that happen? The nine fits somewhere into this classification. Shoot-ability opens another can of thinking.
Credence given to anything, anyone as 'best'; David killed Goliath with a slingshot and a rock.
My take; "survivability will take demonstrable ablility to take what you find and make it work"
I'm curious -- do you know which militaries use a Glock as their standard-issue sidearm? I just don't keep up with such things....

What's best for me may not be best for you. It's like asking what SUV is the best. I own an Explorer and a Jimmy. I like the Explorer (second one I've owned) and my wife likes the Jimmy.
I figure if you can hit what you aim at then that is a good choice for you. If you couldn't hit a bg at five yards with what ever then it's time to find something else that works for you.
What I've found through the years and in being a member of a number of gun forums is that the people who say gun A is the very best don't know much about guns B-Z. They probably only own and shoot gun A and have very little knowledge or experience with B-Z.
It's back to my preference of Glocks. I've only shot a few different models and have owned only four different handguns. My Glock is the only semi that I've owned and have only shot a 1911 once and only put about six rounds through. Clearly not enough to make an informed judgment on weather it is good or not though some will say that a 1911 is the only gun to have. Obviously it's a personal preference of what works for you and not what works for someone else.
Since you threw in "economical," I'll say Glock also. If money were no object, lots of good guns would do fine: HK, SIG, Beretta, etc., but the Glock is very inexpensive in quantity purchases. I also think the Glock is probably the easiest for novices to use adequately in terms of pure shooting. And I concur with your choice of 9mm - it is less expensive and easier for novices (or those who practice little) to shoot reasonably well.

All opinions, particularly those involving politics and Glocks, are mine and not Galco's.
There is no one size fits all best - we all will have our own opinions and our own personal favorites...
And, I can't help it if you guys need brain surgery to know that the answer is the Walther P99 A/S...
its a 45acp
the military hate the 9mm and get 45s when they are allowed
in IRAQ the marine recon and army ranger recon use 45s from KImber Desert Warrior
The FBI has gone to 45s
