Rethinking my thoughts on pistols.....

I'm about 5 months into owning pistols, first one being a Springfield 1911 loaded. Second a SiG 220 carry SAO. Got the SAO as it was the same as the 1911 in funcionability and layout.

I am so impressed by the SiG 220 that I wish I had gone with that for my first and second gun, rather than a 1911, which was bought for more nostalgic reasons.

So, my dilemma is, the more I get into this, the more I realize how much I like the SA/DA SiG with no external safety. A buddy of mine went with me to the gun shop today where I got to handle a SiG 220 Combat, and my gawd is that pistol amazing. Expensive, but just a solid solid weapon.

The dilemma started with thoughts of selling my 1911 and replacing it with a 220 combat. Then I realized that I'd be cross platforming operating layouts with a DA/SA and SAO, but again, I prefer the DA/SA SiG. So, now I'm thinking sell both to get two 220's, one Combat and one Carry, both DA/SA.

Am I dumb for thinking this? I'm honestly a little dissapointed in my months and months of research, listening to the 1911 is God crowd (not that my 1911 isn't amazing, but the SiG is just that much better).

What would you do? I'm bound to lose a lot of money on this, right? Even though my two pistols are mint and my 1911 has upgrades and extra mags?

If you like the Sig Platform that much and you don't like variety in your shooting by all means sell the 1911 and buy more Sigs. IMHO I like variety in calibers and guns. Good luck.

Don't forget a nice safe to keep your pistol's warm, dry and comfy.

This is an addiction, not a hobby. You just as well get used to it.

Count yourself lucky, it seems your addiction is pistols. For me it's long guns. Like Baldy said I enjoy many different calibers spread over man different platforms.

I'll admit right up front that I'm a "gun nut", with around 35 at the moment. I have six SIGs, five Glocks, and assorted other nice stuff. I've been shooting for 30+ years. Enough about creds.

I won't tell you what to do about your money. That's a very personal decision that can affect your short-term finances AND any relationships you may have. I'd simply keep buying, but I've got that kind of mindset.

Now to my point: so far, you've purchased a 1911 and a P220, both of which are in .45 ACP. Are you wedded to the .45? If so, that's OK, but it limits your choices. Also, both guns are "full size", which implies you're not interested in deep concealed carry. That further limits your choices. Finally, you're interested in acquiring more SIGs, which implies you're not afraid to spend big bucks for quality stuff.

You're impressed with SIG - good for you. Me too. As you look at other SIG models, I'd suggest you take a long look at their "Elite" models in all their various model lines. The Elite is a DA/SA that, at its heart, has a "Short Reset Trigger". This means the trigger resets for follow-up SA shots in about 60% the distance of a normal DA/SA SIG. This allows for faster controlled rapid fire while retaining the inherent advantages of DA/SA.

There are three sizes of Elites just in the P220 line. If you're interested in other calibers (9mm, .40 S&W, .357 SIG), there are Elites in the P226 and P229 lines. Check out SIG's website.

One of my SIGs is a P229 Elite in .40 S&W. Of the 100+ firearms I've owned over the years, I consider it the finest overall combination of aesthetics, size, weight, power, capacity, accuracy and controllability I've ever owned.

Happy shopping. IMO, you can't go wrong with ANY SIG.

sfmittels has something there. I'm not to the elite level yet, but my SIGs (so far just a 229 and a 239) are wonderful pistols - I don't want to think about what an elite must feel like to shoot (and better for my bank account that I don't... yet)

Selling or keeping - I've done a little of both - with one exception (a nice but not wonderful FEG PPK clone) I've had mild regrets trading or selling my guns.

I'm now down to a collection which covers most of my model/function interests and would feel real pain to sell or trade any of them. Just so you know it's possible, I have reached a point where I don't see anything out there I *must* have, but I've got more than I like to think about tied up in pistols. One redeeming factor: if I got in a bind I *could* recover most of the investment - but it's going to have to be a pretty serious bind.

Nighthawk 1911, S&W 317 22lr, Sig X-five Allround 9mm, mp subcompact 9mm, S&W 41 22lr.

I've decided I'm going to keep any gun I like and think long and hard about any before I geat rid of one.

In fact, the MP, which eats anything but seems inaccurate as hell is going into rotation as a potential carry or home defense gun. Gonna try some non sighted short range targets with it. Maybe try some Crimson Trace

Point is, from now on I'm gonna buy quality (new or used) and if it performs, keep it forever.

I'd say you've done a terrific job so far with your goal of acquiring quality pieces. Particularly with your X-five (I'm jealous) and your Model 41 (mine is 25 years old and still shoots incredibly well).

I'm surprised you're getting bad results with your MP; they have a better reputation than that. However, your plans for it to be a carry or HD gun are wise: in those roles, your accuracy just needs to be minute-of-bad-guy at self-defense distances. Reliability, safety and speed of employment & target acquisition are more important than 25-yard 10-ring accuracy in a defensive weapon.

I bought a Kahr PM9 a few months ago from Cylinder & Slide gunsmiths. Besides performing their normal magic, they replaced the stock sights with XS 24/7 Tritium Express sights. The front post is a big dot, and the rear sight is a shallow "V". These sights actually deteriorate the gun's precision with carefully aimed shots, but they're about twice as fast getting on target. In a carry piece, this is what you want, IMO.

I like my sigs, my 1911s, and my HKUSP45. Something tells me you will too. If you sell, you'll most likely regret it. Just save up, and buy.

Not sure what kind of shooting you're doing, but before you write off the SA design, you might try a defensive pistol class or competition where speed is weighted against accuracy. That's really where short-trigger guns come into their own, and the DA/SA guns become clumsier. SIGs are fine pistols, but I generally prefer short-trigger guns, since my background is practical competition and defense courses (and lately a war zone).

As far as variety, my interest in pistols is primarily defensive. I keep my 1911 in the safe, but the only reason I don't sell it is because it is my most treasured gift from my father. I have gone completely to Glocks for primary carry and KelTecs for pocket guns. I have no serious interest in owning other handguns, and have sold off almost everything else.
