I would only go hunting with a cartridge that was designed for this. The .40 and .45 were not designed with hunting in mind, and are therefore poor choices for hunting.

Fianally decidedto pony up for an XD. I have a couple of Glocks (17 & 19) and a Browning Hi-power but wanted something with more oomph than a 9mm. My primary use would be self-defense but possible for Deer/Black Bear hunting.
So what do you think .40 S&W or .45 ACP?
Tactical with 5" bbl or ported 4" bbl?

Of the two, I would opt for the .40 Tactical. I would also approach the hunt similar to Bow hunting. Sneak in close. If they are capable of killing a 200# man they are capable of killing a 200# deer. If local rules allow, I would load up some hot hardball for the bear. IMHO

If you want something with a little oomph to hunt with why not just get a .44mag or a .45Colt. They will both bring down bear and deer. Good luck.
i would not hunt with either. but for a man stopper i personally prefer 45 ACP. if it is a night stand gun go with the tactical. for carry go 4" service model.
