Fianally decided:numbchuck: to pony up for an XD. I have a couple of Glocks (17 & 19) and a Browning Hi-power but wanted something with more oomph than a 9mm. My primary use would be self-defense but possible for Deer/Black Bear hunting.
So what do you think .40 S&W or .45 ACP?
Tactical with 5" bbl or ported 4" bbl?
I would only go hunting with a cartridge that was designed for this. The .40 and .45 were not designed with hunting in mind, and are therefore poor choices for hunting.

Of the two, I would opt for the .40 Tactical. I would also approach the hunt similar to Bow hunting. Sneak in close. If they are capable of killing a 200# man they are capable of killing a 200# deer. If local rules allow, I would load up some hot hardball for the bear. IMHO

If you want something with a little oomph to hunt with why not just get a .44mag or a .45Colt. They will both bring down bear and deer. Good luck.
i would not hunt with either. but for a man stopper i personally prefer 45 ACP. if it is a night stand gun go with the tactical. for carry go 4" service model.
