I have found gun dealers willing to do an firearms transfer process for me but of course they will not do it if I buy on line new for a gun they can sell me for more. So now what? It seems I might have to buy from a local store and pay a little more. I found a great price for an XD 9mm and with shipping and the transfer price I can still save about $40.00. Should I just bite the bullet and pay the extra just to have a shop I can deal with for service and warranty work? Thanks
A lot of pawn shops will do it and our happy to have your service. I've seen them charge 10 to 25 dollar most at 20. If I had a gun shop I would have a problem selling guns for someone else. Pawns make more money on other things so this paperwork is almost a side business. Go to budsgunshop.com and look at their ffl list. You might find one near you and check their prices out. That's were I found my place and I found someone close and less money but I still go to the 1st people because they have been so nice to me. I pay 20. Good luck. Impactguns has a list to. I forgot I met this gunshop owner at my range and asked him why he didn't carry more guns in his store. He has around 3 new ones. He told me that his partner has over 75k worth and he has around 50k worth of guns at his home. He does all his selling online and makes more money. Asked why he keeps his shop and it's because it's benn in business for over 115 years so it's more of a hang out and when you go in you feel like you have gone back in time. Still has ammo from the late 1800's.
I think there are several ways to look at it. One is that your local FFL dealer doesn't have to know what the merchandise is until AFTER he receives it, so who cares?
Another is to show your local dealer the Gunbroker listing and ask him if he's willing to match it (be sure to include shipping charges and transfer fees in your calculation). Then, if the Gunbroker deal is 'way better and your local dealer admits it, you're relieved of any guilt since you gave him a shot at it.
Finally, if the net prices are close (and personally, I'd call $40 close), I'd lean to giving my business to my local dealer anyway. It may cost you a few bucks more in the short run, but in the long run you cultivate a positive business relationship. Plus, you contribute in a small way to keeping your local dealer's doors open. With all the FFLs who have shut down over the last few years courtesy of the BATFE's heavy-handed tactics, we need to keep our local dealers around. I got this thing about buying a gun. I have to be able to check it out and feel it in my hand even if it is new. I found two over the years that were defective right out of the box. I don't think I'll ever buy one over the internet. If you do all I can say is good luck and hope you get a good one.
No, that's bull. If at all possible, find another store to shop at and let them know you are taking your business somewhere else. Some pawn shops will do it, and if you can find another dealer in your area go for that.
Some of the on-line dealers have a list of registered FFL dealers that they have already gone through. Ask if they have one in you area. Some may be private home dealers or gunsmiths. If not, the Shotgun News has a list in thier magazine.
Always call the FFL to ensure that he will handle the transaction. You may have other state laws to contend with.
