SIG or Beretta for new pistol user.

I have recently fell in love with shooting and I'm debating on a purchase for a semi-auto pistol. My friend recommended a SIG p229 .40 S+W for protection but the price is pretty steep. I also liked the style of the Beretta and wouldn't mind using a 9mm if it was cheaper.

I doubt I'll have to use the pistols on anyone but it's better to have something and not need it then to need it and not have right? Well any suggestions on which of these to get or maybe a different gun all together. I've only shot a .22LR revolver and a Walther PPK .32ACP and i liked the feel of both. But i would like a reliable, easy to use pistol for whenever i need it.

For a good reliable auto the world is your at your fingertips. I would suggest renting or going to a range with someone with a good selection of handguns and choose the one that your gut tells you to buy. Choosing the right handgun is a very personal decision but my advice would buy the one YOU REALLY WANT the first time, you will not regret it.

I shoot a 229 most of the time, and my main practice buddy uses a beretta px4 storm. Both in 9mm. I like them both very much. By all means shop around and try what you can, but for a premium product you will more than likely pay a premium price. Unless you get a lemon (not likely, but possible) you will never have to know the difference between a good pistol and a not so good one. When I go to a public shooting range, I often trade a few shots with someone who has something I've never tried. Cheaper than renting, and really lets you get an idea of how something shoots. Also, no one has ever seemed bothered if I politely asked to try their "___brand name here___" pistol. Most are more than happy to. Good luck with your shopping.

Both are quality firearms. Have you handled both? Your first clue is which feels best. It may sound silly, but comfort is very important. I know the Sig will feel different in your hand compared to a Beretta. With the price of all factory ammo on the increase, the 9mm round (so far) is the cheapest.

I've held the p229 Sig, dry-fire and field strip. It had some weight to it and the trigger was pretty heavy too. I have yet to really fire one but i will soon.

The beretta 9mm was light, easy trigger and felt really good. I guess when i shoot them it will make my decision easier. But since i haven't shot a lot the beretta seemed more comfortable....and it's easier on the wallet:smt033

I have nothing against a SIG, but I'd go for the Beretta/Taurus in some form of the 92 series. I like the fit, feel and trigger better on that style, plus I would go 9mm because I like it better then 40cal.

I have a Sig 229 in 9mm..Southern Ohio Gun had it at $679 wholesale with nightsights relatively recently

S.D. You have a lot to take into consideration. First; what feels good in your hand? That's purely subjective. Second; What is its' primary function? Is it for the house and range? Do you intend to get a C.W.P. and carry it on a regular basis? Third; What are the laws were you live?
And that's just to start. If your local shooting range has rentals, go try several. If you have friends who shoot offer to buy a box of ammo and try their gun(s). Take the NRA Safety course. Read everything you can find.
Look for gun-specific forums to read what current owners say. This is all important(and more). Your life may depend on your choice.
It may be daunting, but it's all part of learning anything new.
